May 13, 2016 – Mustafa Badreddine’s death will hurt the group’s operational efforts and morale in Syria, but it remains to be seen who it will blame for the attack and whether it will retaliate.On May 13, Hezbollah confirmed the death of its most prominent military figure, Mustafa Badreddine, reportedly killed in an explosion in Damascus on Tuesday night. Given Badreddine’s role as head of the group’s External Security Organization and its forces in Syria, his death represents Hezbollah’s biggest loss since the 2008 assassination of former “chief of staff” Imad Mughniyah. ISTANBUL — They were used to stalk Russian helicopters in Afghanistan, and the United States has worked hard to keep them out of chaotic Syria. But now Kurdish guerrillas battling Turkey’s security forces may now have shoulder-fired missiles — an acquisition analysts say will seriously challenge Turkish airpower and potentially intensify fighting in the region.
On Saturday, media affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a leftist militant group battling the Turkish state, posted a video purporting to show a fighter downing a Cobra attack helicopter with a man-portable air defense system — or MANPADS — in the mountains of southeastern Turkey on Friday morning. The self-proclaimed Islamic State has reportedly declared a “state of emergency” for its capital in Syria.Reports, citing unnamed officials, said that ISIS had begun moving furtively within the city of Raqqa in anticipation of a campaign against the city. The Islamic jihadist group reportedly began covering its military vehicles and bolstering their supplies inside underground bunkers.In recent months, U.S.-backed forces, along with Kurdish forces, have increasingly surrounded Raqqa, closing off supply routes both east and west of the ISIS stronghold. But U.S. officials are confused as to what provoked the supposed announcement.Some suggest this tweet could have caused the panic within the terror organization: “We have seen this declaration of emergency in Raqqa, whatever that means,” Col. Pro-regime forces supported by Russian airpower are continuing operations to encircle and besiege the Syrian opposition in Aleppo City following the expiration of a series of temporary ceasefires on May 12. Russian air operations in Aleppo from April 19 – May 12 demonstrate Russia’s continued prioritization of support to its client regime in Damascus. Russia has nonetheless continued to present itself as a constructive international arbiter to the Syrian conflict through a series of Russian- and U.S.-brokered partial ceasefire deals from May 4 – 11. Russia maintains a robust military presence in Syria and has continued its military campaign, following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a partial withdrawal on March 14 and subsequent reports of continued Russian drawdown. Russia has rather begun to reshape its military deployment in Syria, withdrawing certain airframes from the Bassel al Assad airbase while deploying additional rotary wing aircraft, developing new basing near Palmyra, and maintaining “several thousand” Russian ground forces in the country. Lohnt es sich überhaupt noch, Jakob Augsteins Auslassungen kritisch zu würdigen? Hat er nicht bereits hinreichend unter Beweis gestellt, dass es gute Gründe dafür gibt, ihn des Antisemitismus und der Vorliebe für einen Sozialismus nationaler Prägung zu zeihen? Doch, das hat er – und trotzdem kann und sollte man jemanden mit seiner publizistischen Verbreitung, seiner ökonomischen Potenz und seinem politischen Einfluss nicht ignorieren. Wie Augstein Woche für Woche in seiner Kolumne auf »Spiegel Online« sein krudes Weltbild ausmärt, ist deshalb allemal der Rede wert, zumal er, einem stummen Zwang folgend, immer wieder Israel, die Juden, die USA, den Westen als vermeintlich Schuldige für alle Weltenübel ausfindig macht – auch und gerade, wenn es eigentlich gar nicht um sie geht. »Im Zweifel links« soll das sein, wenn man dem Kolumnentitel folgt, wobei Augstein selbst über alle Zweifel erhaben zu sein glaubt und nur Gewissheiten kennt.
