MESOP : SYRIA’S FATE = EUROPA FATE

What happens next in Aleppo will shape Europe’s future

Natalie Nougayrède – 6 Feb 2016 – THE GUARDIAN – If there were any doubts about Vladimir Putin’s objectives in Syria, the recent Russian military escalation around this city must surely have set them aside

IAleppo falls, Syria’s vicious war will take a whole new turn, one with far-reaching consequences not just for the region but for Europe too. The latest government assault on the besieged northern Syrian city, which has caused tens of thousands more people to flee in recent days, is also a defining moment for relations between the west and Russia, whose airforce is playing a key role. The defeat of anti-Assad rebels who have partially controlled the city since 2012 would leave nothing on the ground in Syria but Assad’s regime and Islamic State. And all hope of a negotiated settlement involving the Syrian opposition will vanish. This has been a longstanding Russian objective – it was at the heart of Moscow’s decision to intervene militarily four months ago. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=70955

MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY : Is Assad’s Russian-backed Offensive a Game-changer in Syria?

MESOP TODAYS OPINON : KURDS AS CANNON FODDER FOR PUTIN & OBAMA ?

Isis in Iraq – The Kurds have fought off the jihadists, but fear they will be used as cannon fodder and then discarded

Patrick Cockburn reports from Halabja – THE INDEPENDENT – 6 Feb 2016 – One of the most fought over territories on earth, Iraqi Kurdistan had suffered at the hands of Saddam Hussein’s chemical weapons long before the appearance of the murderous Isis. Its cities are now dotted with half-completed hotels and apartments – economic prosperity is a fantasy. The perceived incompetence and greed of Kurdish leaders tarnishes their success against Isis. And bitter experience makes the Kurds suspicious that they will be used as cannon fodder and then discarded. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=70946

WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA)

MESOP TODAYS ARGUMENT : Obama’s Disastrous Betrayal of the Syrian Rebels – How the White House is handing victory to Bashar al-Assad, Russia, and Iran.

BY EMILE HOKAYEMFEBRUARY 5, 2016 – FOREIGN POLICY

Last February, President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and its Shiite auxiliaries mounted a large-scale attempt to encircle Aleppo, the northern city divided between regime and rebels since 2012 and battered by the dictator’s barrel bombs. Islamist and non-Islamist mainstream rebels — to the surprise of those who have derided their performance, let alone their existence — repelled the offensive at the time. What followed was a string of rebel advances across the country, which weakened Assad so much that they triggered Moscow’s direct intervention in September, in concert with an Iranian surge of forces, to secure his survival. Syrian rebels are losing Aleppo & perhaps also the war

By Liz Sly and Zakaria Zakaria February 4   – THE WASHINGTON POST – GAZIANTEP, Turkey — Syrian rebels battled for their survival in and around Syria’s northern city of Aleppo on Thursday after a blitz of Russian airstrikes helped government loyalists sever a vital supply route and sent a new surge of refugees fleeing toward the border with Turkey.

The Russian-backed onslaught against rebel positions in Aleppo coincided with the failure of peace talks in Geneva, and helped reinforce opposition suspicions that Russia and its Syrian government allies are more interested in securing a military victory over the rebels than negotiating a settlement. 5 Feb 2016 – MESOP – The Assad regime’s offensive in Aleppo, backed by heavy bombing by Russian planes, is driving thousands of people to flee the city. MESOP : KRG COUNTRY – NO LAND OF MILK & HONEY -Oil price & Isis ruin the Kurds’ dream of riches

Patrick Cockburn @indyworld – THE INDEPENDENT . 7 Feb 2016 – It is not a good time to be a minority in the Middle East and, though the Kurds are powerful today in Iraq and Syria, they remain a minority which will always be vulnerable to a change in the political tides. They know that what has happened to the Yazidis and Christians over the past 18 months, as ethnic and sectarian cleansing becomes the norm, could happen to them.Yohanna Toyama, a community leader from the Christian town of Qaraqosh outside Mosul, whose 60,000 people fled when Isis captured it in 2014, has a stark view of the prospects for minority communities. “We will all be eaten by the majorities,” he says. THE GERMAN KURDISH CHAPTER

Ganz einfach: Der Mann glaubt an Zauberei.
