Denmark Offers to Lead NATO Trainings in Iraq

Basnews English 26/11/2019 – 15:20 ERBIL — Denmark is ready to lead the NATO training mission for Iraqi armed forces, the Danish Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

Canada is currently leading the mission which has so far trained thousands of Iraqi troops for the ongoing battle against the Islamic State. (IS).

“With the contribution we will be able to deliver an even stronger effort in our fight against the terror group ISIL by training Iraqis,” Reuters quoted Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod.

According to the statement, Denmark has offered to lead the mission from the end of 2020 until mid-2022.

The country will put the offer forward at a NATO summit in London next week.
