164 Killed as Russia & Regime Bomb Before Ceasefire
More than 160 people were killed across Syria on Saturday as Russia and the Assad regime bombed before a ceasefire takes effect tomorrow evening. The pro-opposition Local Coordination Committees reported that the victims included 32 children and 24 women. Of the deaths, 57 were in Idlib Province, amid pro-Assad airstrikes on a marketplace in Idlib city. The toll is expected to rise, given that some of the injured are in critical condition.Another 56 people died in Aleppo Province, with airstrikes on Batbo, Salhin, and Kafrnaha. A number of Kurds protested against the Democratic Union Party (PYD), a left-wing Kurdish political party that has dominated much of the Kurdish political landscape in Northern Syria over the past four years and has recently arrested politicians and activists., Meanwhile, in Turkey, some activists in alongside the Geroun Media Network launched a campaign to highlight the plight of political prisoners. A number of northern Syrian cities (Al-Qamishli, Amuda, al-Maʿbadah, Tell Tamr, ad-Darbasiyah, and al-Malikiyah) have protested against the PYD on August 16, 2016, in response to the party’s arrest of politicians and activists, such as Mohammad Ismaʿil and Neshat Zaza, members of the Kurdish National Council (KNC, a coalition of political parties allied with Masʿud Barzani, the president of Iraqi Kurdistan) political bureau; Saleh Jamil, ʿAbdul-Karim Haji, and Nafeʿ ʿAbdullah, members of the KNC Central Committee; Mizkin Mohammad Ramadan, a member of the Secretariat General of the latter; and Ibrahim Barro, the president of the KNC who was arrested by the party and exiled to Iraqi Kurdistan for taking part in demonstrations and criticizing the PYD’s policies. Dem SPD-Vorsitzenden Gabriel verdanken wir entgegen landläufiger Meinung immer wieder wertvolle Denkanstöße. Etwa den, der Frage nachzugehen, was eine Populismusmaschine ist. Dafür stellen wir uns, wie in der „Feuerzangenbowle“, einmal janz dumm, also etwa so wie die SPD, und sagen: Eine Populismusmaschine, das ist ein großer, runder Raum mit zwei Löchern, durch das eine kommt der Dampf rein – und das andere, das kriegen wir später. Das ist nämlich nur etwas für höhere Semester. Es kommt schließlich ganz entscheidend darauf an, wo der Dampf wieder austritt. Entweicht er auf der rechten Seite des Apparats, dann ist das ganz böser Populismusdunst, erzeugt allein zur Verbrühung und anschließender Verführung des weichgekochten Volkshirns. Links dagegen steigt nur reiner, weißer Rauch auf, als Zeichen dafür, dass die SPD schon verstanden hat, was sie in das Fernwärmenetz einspeisen muss, damit ihre auf Distanz gegangenen Wähler, die jetzt mit der AfD kuscheln, sich wieder für sie erwärmen können.
