While a significant number of ordinary Kurds suffer terror and poverty, the KDP, PUK and their foreign partners control the lion’s share of all business and invest millions in profits for themselves and their families. Turkish capitalists control 70% of other businesses enterprises and may come to dominate the region.1
The scale of the web of relations, insider trading, nepotism, cronyism and outright corruption is astonishing to outsiders and merits hundreds of pages to detail the sleight of hand and greed 2. Such is well beyond the purpose of this study which is mainly to expose how the Kurdish business model does not benefit Kurdistan and its people but primarily the ruling families and their foreign partners.
The most influential people are those who have one hand in politics and the other in the oil and gas sector along with military and mercenary cronies. Brookings – Friday, May 19, 2017 On Thursday, the United States conducted air strikes on Iran-backed Shiite militia groups fighting alongside the Bashar Assad regime in Syria. Indeed, since responding to the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons attack on Khan Sheikhoun in early April, the Trump administration is reportedly debating escalating U.S. involvement there and, while Thursday’s airstrike was aimed at repelling the militias’ advance towards a base used by the United States and its allies, Washington must prepare itself for a possible confrontation with Iran, which wields a complex (but resistible) influence in Syria that allows it to dominate realities on the ground. Through this influence, Iran and its Shiite militia proxies will ultimately shape the future of the Syrian state and society—including its governing and security structures, economic environment (which will determine the beneficiaries of the estimated $200 billion needed to reconstruct the country), and its foreign relations. Aktuell läuft vor dem Staatsschutzsenat der Prozess gegen den türkischen Staatsangehörigen Zeki E. Dem 36-Jährigen wird die Mitgliedschaft in der Arbeiterpartei Kurdistans (PKK) und damit in einer ausländischen terroristischen Vereinigung vorgeworfen. Er soll unter dem Decknamen “Siyar” von März 2013 bis Ende August 2014 als hauptamtlicher Kader der PKK in Deutschland tätig gewesen sein. Zuletzt hatte ein Urteil des Senats große Aufmerksamkeit erregt, als ein kurdischer Funktionär eine Freiheitsstrafe von einem Jahr und neun Monaten erhalten hatte – die zur Bewährung ausgesetzt wurde. Vorher hatten die Richter in ähnlichen Prozessen höhere Strafen verhängt. Die mehr als 70 Zuschauer im Saal applaudierten im Stehen, als klar war, dass der PKK-Mann auf freien Fuß kommt.
