Third Kurdish party joins armed struggle in Iran

US Marines in Syria to defend Kurds against Turkey / US Marines in northern Syria (DEBKA FILES ISRAEL) – 1 Mai 2017 – The US has sent a group of US Marines armed with eight-wheeled Stryker armored carriers to northern Syria as a buffer between Syrian Kurds and Turkish forces, after Turkish air strikes killed 20 members of the US-backed Kurdish YPG (People’s Protection Units) militia, injured 18 and destroyed the local Kurdish command headquarters. Clashes broke out between Turkish and Kurdish forces after the air strikes.

In May 2016, we asked how long the United States and Turkey could keep up appearances of alliance and partnership in Syria, given differences over US backing for the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG). Following Turkey’s airstrikes April 25 against the YPG in northern Syria and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in the Sinjar region of Iraq, reality may be outpacing appearances.
A Pentagon spokesman said that the Combined Air Operations Center received less than one-hour notice of the strikes, “certainly not coordination as you would expect from a partner and an ally in the fight against [the Islamic State].” The Turkish strikes killed 20 YPG fighters in Syria and, inadvertently, five or six Iraqi peshmerga fighters in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. 1 Mai 2017 – MESOP – Ankara is gravely concerned by photos of U.S. soldiers attending the funerals of Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) militants in the wake of Turkish air strikes on the two groups, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.
“We may come [to strike the YPG] overnight, all of a sudden without warning,” Erdogan told reporters at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport before leaving for a two-day visit to India. “We are seriously concerned to see U.S. flags in a convoy that has YPG rags on it. We will mention these issues to President [Donald Trump] during our visit to the United States on May 16,” he added. Erdogan was asked about photos said to show U.S. soldiers patrolling along the Turkish border and attending the funerals of the YPG militants apparently killed in Turkish air strikes.
