Ankara’s Syrian plan falters as Moscow sets up in Afrin
23 March 20,17 – Turkey’s last-ditch efforts to harness Russian military and diplomatic heft to counter the Syrian Kurds and unravel their alliance with the United States are showing few signs of succeeding, like much else in the country’s ill-fated Syrian policy.
If anything, both the United States and Russia are steadily deepening their ties with the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and its Arab allies who operate under the umbrella of the Syrian Defense Forces (SDF). And viewed from Ankara, they are doing so at Turkey’s expense.
The latest blows came from Russia. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov cranked up pressure on Turkey today to drop its long-running objections to the participation of the YPG’s political arm, the Democratic Union Party (PYD), in the Geneva peace talks. “We will continue to look for solutions to this issue with our Turkish partners … but it is not possible to postpone it in the long run,” Lavrov said. US special forces, the British SAS, and Norwegian counterparts have been based for some time in al-Tanf near the Syrian border with Iraq and Jordan. However, last week the Americans set up a joint operations room with the groups Maghaweer al-Thawra — known as the New Syrian Army when it was created with US support in late 2015 — and Jaish Usud al-Sharqiya and Liwa al-Shaheed Ahmad Abdo, both linked to the US-led Military Operations Center based in Jordan.

23 March2017 – DEBKA FILES – The Israeli drone that targeted the Syrian militiaman Yasser Sayad outside the Golan town of Quneitra Sunday, March 19, reinforced the message first carried by the Israeli Arrow 2 which shot down a Syrian SA-5 anti-air missile Friday. The Israeli ambassador was called twice to the Russian foreign ministry.Both hits were precise: Sayad was on his way to join the Hizballah forces who are trampling Syrian rebel villages on the Hermon slopes to clear their path to the Golan; and the Syrian SA-5 was intercepted microseconds before hitting the Israeli jets attacking a consignment of Hizballah weapons outside the Syria T4 base near Palmyra, where a Russian contingent is also housed. This fixation came into sharp focus the day after the air strike in a rare admission by Hizballah of the loss of a commander. Basnews English – 24/03/2017 – SINJAR — Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has started mobilizing its armed forces from Qandil mountainous areas to the Yezidi town of Sinjar, and from there to the neighboring Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava), an official said.
“The PKK continues causing troubles in Sinjar as it has turned [the Yezidi town] into a military base,” said Wais Naif, head of Sinjar mayoral council. Criticizing the increasing number of PKK guerrillas and constant military mobilizations in the area, Naif said fresh fighters are heading from Qandil to Sinjar and Rojava. Following a military clash between the Roj Peshmerga and PKK forces earlier this month near Sinjar, Yezidi officials have been blaming PKK for sending more fighters in to further enflame the tensions. www.mesop.de
