Basnews English – 16/03/2017 – 14:48 – Kurdistan – ERBIL — Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), with support from a number of Kurdish parties, is working in coordination with the Shi’ite Hashd al-Shaabi militia to secure a route from Iran to northern Syria through Kurdistan Region in Iraq. PKK has been increasing the number of its forces in Kurdistan Region. Apart from its hundreds of forces in Kirkuk and Makhmour, PKK has sent dozens of additional guerrillas to Kirkuk and Makhmour with support of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). It has also deployed more guerrillas in Sinjar and other border areas.

A confidential source revealed to BasNews that PKK’s main reason behind such moves is to secure a corridor between Iran and Syria which is extended through Kurdistan Region.

The source said PKK is getting support from PUK and Gorran (Change) Movement and Kurdistan Islamic Group (KIG) to execute Iran’s project of Shi’ite Crescent, a corridor extended from Iran through northern Iraq and Syria, all the way to Lebanon.

The following map, prepared by BasNews, shows the locations where PKK and Hashd al-Shaabi forces are stationed, in an effort to secure the Shi’ite corridor. The source also disclosed that the PKK military officials in Qandil are discussing a plan to wage a war against Kurdistan Region and Peshmerga forces, noting that PUK, Gorran and KIG have stated their support to PKK for attacking the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
