18 Nov 2017 – IRAN/RUSSIA ARE CONCENTRATING COMBAT POWER TO SEIZE SYRIAN TOWN, ABU KAMAL, ON BORDER WITH IRAQ: Why? To counter US/SDF control of Raqqa. Tehran wants a southern border crossing to connect Tehran to Der ez Zour to pressure Raqqa from the East along Euphrates. Russia is providing air support for Iranian troops preparing to assault Abu Kamal. There is much more to this situation, as the recent US decision to keep American combat power on the ground in Syria after the defeat of ISIS is unacceptable to Tehran/Moscow/Damascus.
