MESOP NEWS FOCUS : US SENATORS CONTRA ERDOGAN !
NORTH KURDISTAN (TURKEY)
Last week, a bipartisan group of 14 U.S. Senators sent a letter to President Donald Trump concerning the human rights situation in Turkey. While recognizing Turkey’s importance as a NATO ally and tradition of stability, the Senators noted a concerted effort by the government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan to “corrode Turkey’s democracy.” In addition to the arrests of U.S. consulate employees, the letter laments the arrest of members of Amnesty International and journalists. The lawmakers expressed support for the suspension of non-immigrant visas at U.S. facilities throughout Turkey, but urge the President to mitigate possible impacts on people in need of these services. In addition, the Senators encourage President Trump to “send a clear message” to Erdogan that future cooperation with the United States must be based on a “shared commitment to human rights and rule of law.” Signatories of the letter include Sens. John McCain (R-AZ), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), and Bernie Sanders (D-VT). www.mesop.de
