‘Racist Music Video’ Causes Concern in Turkey / “Everybody Armenian, I’m the Kuvai Milliye”

Rumet Serhat – 1 May 2016 – DİYARBAKIR — A newly-released music video, shot in Sur district of Diyarbakır, caused parliamentary question as it apparently contains racist phrases in the lyrics.

The music video contains racist lyrics against Kurds, calling them  “Armenians”, thus making racist statements against Armenians as well. The video starts as “I’m alone ‘Atam’ [a tribute to the founder of the Republic of Turkey Mustafa Kemal Atatürk], kill them in the name of Allah, the name of Prophet Muhammed, kill them in the name of our martyrs.”It continues singing, “ Wake up everybody, all of them [Kurds] are Armenians.. if you ask me, the solution is easy. Shot them in the head if they don’t submit!’

In addition to destroyed houses with streets covered in ruins, some scenes from the video music show the burning of the Kurdish colors (green, red and yellow).

Questions were given by the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) MPs Feleknas Uca and Nadir Yıldırım to Turkey’s Minister of Internal Affairs Efkan Ala, complaining over the hate speech against Kurds, Armenians, Greeks, Christians, Jews and anti-Semitism in the lyrics. They also asked how the video was shot while the area is still closed to the public and MPs from CHP and HDP.HDP’s Armenian MP Garo Paylan said later that he was informed by the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Sabahattin Öztürk that the person in the video is a member of the security forces, and has been ordered to be suspended. Journalists who worked in the district prior to the curfews claimed that, judging by the images in the video, at least two quarters of the district have been completely destroyed. It is believed that the video was shot with a professional equipment and crew.
