MESOP LATEST – ASSAD NO ! : German FM urged opposition to accept Assad’s regime in transitional period

2014-03-17 – zamanalwsl – German foreign Minister urged Syria’s opposition, in meeting took place last month with the interim PM Ahmad Toumeh, to accept Bashar al-Assad’s regime in the transitional governing period, well-informed source said. Mr. Frank Steinmeier, the veteran diplomat and German Minister of foreign affair, has commended the opposition participation in Geneva talks last January.

 Steinmeier insisted on Assad’s participation in the transitional period, urging Tomeh to find a half-way solution and to accept Assad’s representation even for a short period, source said. Steinmeier told Tomeh: “How would you expect that Assad will stop fighting, while he knows he would be sent to the Criminal court, as you call constantly,” source said.   The German invitation to Tomeh was to discuss that idea and deliver Germany’s point of view from the Syrian crisis, as it refused to supply the opposition with arms, but gave indirect financial support. https://www.zamanalwsl.net/en/news/4138.html
