Qubad Talabani to be announced as KRG deputy PM

10-1-2014 – MESOP – Former Iraqi Kurdistan representative in Washington Qubad Talabani is a candidate to become Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) deputy Prime minister in the new cabinet of the self-ruling region.

KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani has appointed three deputies, and Qubad Talabani -the son of Iraq’s President, Jalal Talabani – will be the first deputy of the prime minister in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc, the second and third deputies will be for Gorran (Change Movement) and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), a source in PUK said.

“The position for parliament speaker will be for PUK with KDP deputy,” the source said. The KDP will have seven ministries, Gorran four and PUK three, two for Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) and the other three parties will have one ministry each. The Iraqi Kurdistan legislative elections of 2013 took place on 21 September 2013. It was the fourth legislative election in Iraqi Kurdistan since 1992 and the candidates were competing for a total of 111 seats out of which 11 seats were reserved for minorities. KDP won the election be achieving 38 seats, and Gorran became the second biggest party in Kurdistan region by having 24 seats and 17 seats for PUK as the third party in the region.
