Facebook’s Policing of Syrian Opposition Pages Is Drastically Affecting Their Civil War / CLICK BOTTOM LINK FOR PICTURES
By Angela Hennessy – 5.3.2014 – Last December, a woman from the Syrian community in Toronto reached out to me for help after a Syrian opposition Facebook page of which she was an administrator of was deleted from the internet. She told me that in mid-December, Facebook deleted the page called Likes For Syria, which had over 80,000 ‘likes.’ Several Syrian-Canadians organized the page shortly after the revolution in Syria began back in 2011. The page was used as a tool for posting news stories about the crisis, messages of hope, and creating awareness in the western world—something that many feel is desperately needed.

Ukrainian Revolution On Syrian Facebook Pages: Advice From Syrian Rebels To Ukrainian Rebels

| The revolution in Kiev has been widely covered in the Arab press, which compared it to the Syrian revolution and called the Ukraine another arena, in addition to Syria, of the cold war between Russia and the U.S.[1] Concurrently, the Ukrainian revolution was also highlighted on Syrian Facebook pages, especially those of many Syrian citizens. They likewise drew similarities between their revolution and that of the Ukrainian people, but the tone taken by most of them was humorous or sarcastic.
Thus, for example, Syrian activists from Homs started a virtual Facebook event titled “Give Advice To The Rebels Of Ukraine And Venezuela.” The page received many “likes” and thousands of Syrian oppositionists filled it with advice (most of it sarcastic) for Ukraine’s rebels based on their experience rebelling against their own regime. The following are examples of the posts on Facebook pages, both serious and sarcastic: |
