Not quiet on the Northern Front / By Jonathan Spyer & Benjamin Weinthal
New York Daily News – March 11, 2014 – JERUSALEM — The disintegration of the Syrian state into warring enclaves is bringing with it new challenges and threats for Israel. Alarm bells have now been sounded on Israel’s shared northern border with Syria. “For the moment, they [Jihadis] are not fighting us, but we know their ideology. . . . It could be that, in the coming months, we could find ourselves dragged into confrontation with them,” said a top-level Israel Defense Forces officer.
The Conscience of Syria : An Interview with Activist & Intellectual Yassin al-Haj Saleh
Danny Postel – Nader Hashemi – Yassin al-Haj Saleh – March 12, 2014 – Danny Postel & Nader Hashemi, co-editors of The Syria Dilemma.
Yassin al-Haj Saleh is often called the conscience of the Syrian revolution. Born in Raqqa in 1961, he was arrested in 1980, while a medical student in Aleppo, and imprisoned for his membership in a left-wing organization. He remained a political prisoner until 1996, spending the last of his sixteen years behind bars in the notorious desert-prison of Tadmur (Palmyra).
TODAY’S MESOP EDITORIAL : In Syria, rebel with a cause / By David IGNATIUS
WASHINGTON POST – March 14, 2014 – With the Ukraine crisis, any fleeting hope that the U.S. and Russia could soon broker a political settlement in Syria has vanished. The United States needs an alternate strategy for strengthening Syrian moderates who can resist both the brutal Bashar al-Assad regime and al-Qaeda extremists.
A new Syrian opposition leader who may help get the balance right is Jamal Maarouf. He heads a group called the Syria Revolutionaries Front and is the leading moderate rebel commander in northern Syria. I spoke Thursday by phone with Maarouf, who was near the Syria-Turkey border. He outlined a two-pronged strategy that sounded more pragmatic than anything I’ve heard from the opposition in recent months.
MESOP FOCUS : THE FAKE OF A “NEW SYRIAN ELECTION LAW”
Syria’s parliament approved a new election law Thursday allowing multiple candidates to run in elections, about four months ahead of the expiration of the seven-year term of President Bashar al-Assad. The move in theory opened the door for candidates to contest Assad, who has suggested he would run for another term, but hasn’t yet confirmed whether he will seek re-election. However, the legislation includes residency rules for candidates, which could bar from running most opposition leaders who have lived in exile, many since before the start of the uprising in March 2011.
WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA)
“ The Syrian people believe that Assad is in power because Israel backs him, so they direct their resentment both against him and against Israel and consider Israel to be a partner and even a cause of their suffering. Changing this perception requires a clear, practical position from Israel that would alter the Syrian people’s sensitivities in this regard. This would increase the chances of achieving peace and stability in the region.” (Kamal al Labwani)
