March 20, 2014 – In 2012, Jabhat al-Nusra (JN) was officially designated by the U.S. government as a terrorist organization. Early on in the conflict, some Syrian opposition media outlets accused the group of being “created by the regime,” but others and even the same outlets have more recently praised the group’s battles and achievements, calling it “an integral part of the revolutionary forces.” This is despite the fact that Jabhat al-Nusra does not call for revolutionary principles such as freedom and democracy, insisting rather on implementing an “Islamic state” in Syria.

Dr. al-Labwani is right that “It is neither moral nor realistic to hope that Assad and his allies will prevail after all that they have done, and his regime should not be assisted.” He is also right that there is currently a dearth of practical and tangible measures that could change the situation on the ground, and so I applaud his effort to provide a framework for such a discussion. That said, Dr. al-Labwani’s suggestions are either too vague to be useful or too unrealistic to be put into practice.

Als deutsche Firmen Chemiewaffen nach Syrien lieferten, hatte der BND offenbar Kenntnis davon. Mehr noch: Es gibt den Verdacht, dass einige Lieferungen quasi unter staatlicher Aufsicht liefen.

Middle East Monitor – 20.3.2014 – Head of the Syrian Opposition Coalition Ahmed Al-Jarba called on Tuesday for the EU to supply ground to air missiles to the Syrian opposition. During a speech at the EU Parliament in Brussels, Al-Jarba said: “We call for the EU to supply us with anti-aircraft weapons in order to protect our people…We need anti-aircraft rockets.”

MESOP Syria Daily: Regime “No Discussions About Assad’s Future”

Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad told The Wall Street Journal, “The issue of [Assad] relinquishing power is now behind us and this is a flagrant interference in Syria’s internal affairs. This is completely finished and we are not ready to discuss it at all, at all.”
(PYD) YPG forces warn media activists ‘not to publish YPG-linked news without permission’
20-03-2014 – ARA News – Duhok, Iraqi Kurdistan– The General Command of the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) issued a statement on Tuesday evening, warning media activists not to publish any news updates about the current military operations carried out by the YPG in northern Syria without a permission by the Media Center of the YPG forces. The statement warned that the YPG −military arm of the Democratic Union Party (PYD)− would consider the distribution of any YPG-linked news without first referring to its Media Center “an attempt to deliver information to terrorists” (in reference to fighters of ISIL group).

KURDWATCH, 18. März 2014 – Dschigarkhwin ʿAbdurrazzaq Mula Ahmad (geb. 1985 in al Qamischli) ist Student und Aktivist. Er wurde am 3. März 2012 in Aleppo verhaftet und am 13. Oktober 2013 auf Antrag seines Anwalts gegen Kaution freigelassen. Ein Gerichtsverfahren gegen ihn ist noch anhängig. Mehrere Monate seiner Haft verbrachte er im Zentralgefängnis von Aleppo. Dort erlebte er, wie Dutzende Mitgefangene verhungerten sowie durch Folter und bei militärischen Angriffen ums Leben kamen.

KURDWATCH, March 18, 2014—Jigarkhwin ʿAbdurrazzaq Mula Ahmad (b. 1985 in al~Qamishli) is a student and activist. He was arrested on March 3, 2012 in Aleppo and was released on bail on October 13, 2013 at the petition of his attorney. A trial against him is still pending. He spent several months of his imprisonment in Aleppo’s central prison. There he witnessed how dozens of fellow prisoners died of starvation or were killed by torture or military attacks.
