What can we learn from Homs?

12-5-2014 – Al Monitor – Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told Julian Pecquet this week that the negotiated exit by rebel forces from the Old City of Homs, which had been under siege by Syrian government forces, was a “huge victory” for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. That is one way to see it. Other ways might be as a victory for the people of Homs, who finally got some relief from a brutal siege, and as a possible model of the incremental, painstaking and localized diplomacy required to bring relief to Syrians in war zones, especially given the collapse of the Geneva process.

12.5.2014 – THE Guardian –   Iran and its close ally President Bashar al-Assad have won the war in Syria, and the US-orchestrated campaign in support of the opposition’s attempt to topple the Syrian regime has failed, senior Iranian officials have told the Guardian. “We have won in Syria,” said Alaeddin Borujerdi, chairman of the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee and an influential government insider. “The regime will stay. The Americans have lost it.”

Assayish forces deny torturing Syrian Kurd to death / Insulting Authority of PYD

ARA News – 12-5-2014 – Qamishli, Syria– The General Command of the Assayish forces in Efrin city released a statement on Thursday regarding the death of a prisoner at the Assayish detention center in Efrin, northweast of Syria, denying their involvement in his death. According to reports, Hanan Hamdosh, 35, was killed under torture by members of the Assayish after detaining him on the background of a traffic accident and for insulting the authority of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and its security forces of the Assayish.

The delegation was met today by PUK officials Mahmud Haji Salih, responsible for parliamentary relations, and Khalil Khidir, who is responsible for relations with other Kurdish parties.
