MESOP SYRIA INSIGHT NEWS

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said that Syria will miss the June 30 deadline for the complete elimination of its chemical weapons stockpile. In a May 23 letter to the U.N. Security Council, Ban noted that 7.2 percent of the regime’s declared chemical arsenal remains in Syria and the government insists it doesn’t have control of security in the areas where the materials are stored. He urged Syria to conclude “the remaining removal operations as quickly as possible, as the authorities have pledged to do.” In a speech at West Point, U.S. President Barack Obama pledged to increase support for the moderate opposition in Syria’s war though U.S. officials said measures are in the early stages. Meanwhile, a U.S. citizen suspected of involvement with al-Nursa Front has conducted a suicide truck bombing in the northern Idlib province, in what is believed to be the first time an American has participated in such an attack in Syria.

Most Excellent is He in whom I trust.” “This is the situation in the Yarmouk camp,” says Amr Shihab, a Palestinian humanitarian relief activist. “Behind the cameras that shoot those dying of starvation and behind the barricades of al-Nusra Front and Aknaf Bayt al-Maqdis Brigades, stand individuals that never knew the taste of hunger during this war.”

MESOP  : CENTRALIST DICTATIONS – Accept the Soviets – or your are counterrevolutionary

“They (PYD) only give us permission to operate if we recognize the cantons,” senior KDP-S leader Mohammed Ismail told Al-Monitor in Erbil

LONDON — The Kurdish parties in Iraq and Syria are increasingly engaged in a low-scale cold war. The new power vacuum in the Kurdish areas of Syria has led to an escalation of tit-for-tat arrests, political office closures, expulsions, demonstrations, media campaigns and border closures instead of more cooperation. A series of tit-for-tat incidents has worsened relations between the Kurdistan Workers Party of Abdullah Ocalan and the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Massoud Barzani.

MESOP INSIGHT

by Yoel Guzansky, Yoram Schweitzer, Noa Katzir, and Elad Hochman, INSS – The presence of foreign fighters in Syria and the danger posed by their return to their countries of origin could create a security problem for many countries inside and outside the region, if only because of the large number of combatants and the many different countries from which they come. There is already evidence of “Syrian alumni” becoming involved in terrorist activity in their countries of origin and in various combat zones in the Middle East.
