MESOP : THE CALIPHATE ADMINISTRATION – Islamic State’s Educational Regulations in Raqqa Province
by Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi • Aug 28 – As has been apparent for some time, Raqqa city serves as the de facto capital of the Islamic State (IS), where new aspects in governance are tried and tested, including the most brutal aspects of it such as crucifixion of those accused of planting IEDs (executed first, then hung on a cross). Likewise the education system in Raqqa has seen a number of regulations imposed by IS, most notably gender segregation in schools and the obligation for schoolgirls to wear hijab beyond the fifth year of primary education (age 10/11). The latest statement below indicates a clear ideological framework for the regulation of content of education.
WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA) MESOP INSIGHT : Ghouta rebel alliance hopes to break siege
28-8-2014 – At least six major FSA battalions operating in the outskirts of Damascus announced Wednesday in a videotaped conference the formation of the “United Military Command for East Ghouta,” to coordinate efforts and break the siege imposed on the Damascus suburb since early 2013. The joint command will include, among other factions, Jaish al-Islam, Ahrar a-Sham, Feilaq a-Sham, and the Islamic Union for Soldiers of the Levant, and will be headed by Mohammed Zahran Alloush, leader of Jaish al-Islam. Outside of purely military objectives, the joint command also aims to “support the East Ghouta judiciary council…[and] bring every criminal to account.” The announcement comes two weeks after the regime captured Mleiha, a major setback for rebels that opened the door for Syrian army forces into rebel-held East Ghouta.

The photographs, which were published yesterday on the Internet, show the aftermath of the Islamic State’s latest conquest against the Syrian military. Islamic State fighters overran the Tabqa airbase last weekend. [See LWJ report, Islamic State fighters assault last Syrian stronghold in Raqqah.] Tabqa was the last bastion for Syrian military forces in Raqqah province, which is now fully under the control of the Islamic State.
