ARA News – 29.8.2014 – Afrin, Syria – On Thursday morning the pro-regime warplanes targeted the Kurdish-populated area of Afrin in the countryside north of Aleppo, in northern Syria. Local sources reported that two rockets hit Afrin countryside on Thursday morning, without causing casualties. The pro-Assad warplane bombed agricultural land between the village of Qatma and the city of Azaz with two guided missiles.
“The reason behind the attack is unclear as this area is only populated by civilians and there is no presence for any rebel factions,” one of the residents of Afrin told ARA News. This bombing came a few days after a visit by Colonel Abdul Jabbar Aqidi, commander of the elite in the opposition-linked Free Syrian Army (FSA), accompanied by Ahmed Afash, commander of Ahrar Souriya battalion to Afrin area where they held a meeting with the leadership of Kurdish forces of the Kurdish Popular Protection Units (YPG) –military arm of the Democratic Union Party (PYD).
Noteworthy, this is not the first time the pro-regime forces bombed the Afrin countryside since the beginning of the crisis in Syria; the area saw a similar attack last May that displaced hundreds of families.
