October 4, 2014 – REUTERS / AFP / MESOP – SURUC/BEIRUT,— The main Kurdish armed group in Syria called on its kinsmen across the region to help it stop a massacre in the Kurdish town of Kobani in Syrian Kurdistan as Islamic State IS militants armed with tanks edged closer on its outskirts and pummeled it with artillery fire.

4-10-2014 – Long War Journal – In a video released by ‘Amaq News, an unofficial news organization affiliated with the Islamic State, several Russian-speaking fighters are shown taking positions overlooking the Kurdish city of Kobane (or Ayn al Arab in Arabic). The fighters, according to the video’s title, are Chechen and more than likely belong to a group loyal to Omar al Shishani, a senior military leader in the Islamic State. The Islamic State has been battling forces from the PKK-linked People’s Protection Units, or YPG, for control of the Syrian town. [See Threat Matrix report, Islamic State advances near Kobane.]

VOA – 4-10-2014 – General Abu Ismaeel of Liwa Thuwwar al-Raqqa, an FSA group fighting alongside YPG in Kobani against ISIS asks immediate help from the US.Abu Ismaeel warns that a huge disaster is on its way for Kobani unless the international coalition immediately interferes. “We do not understand why the US led coalition airstrikes is just bombing the empty bases of ISIS terrorists, but not Kobani where they are launching fierce attacks.”General Abu Ismaeel also says they are shocked because of Turkey’s position regarding the fighting on its boarders, but so far Ankara has not made any move. FORD – New York Times – OCT. 3, 2014 – WASHINGTON — President Obama made the right decision to boost military aid to moderate Syrian rebels last year, but today America’s approach to attacking Islamic State fighters risks undermining the moderate opposition and alienating support among the Syrian public.Last Friday, for the first time I can recall, opponents of the government of President Bashar al-Assad burned an American flag, and anti-American demonstrations mushroomed across opposition-held areas in Syria. These people have no love for the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, but this means something went seriously wrong with our initial campaign of airstrikes.

One of the more noted recent trends in rebel dynamics in Syria is the weakening of the Islamic Front, widely noted last year as the most powerful rebel alliance in terms of manpower and fighting capabilities.
