WASHINGTON DC (Kurdistan 24) “The Iran-backed groups launching rockets at our Embassy are a danger not only to us but to the Government of Iraq, neighboring diplomatic missions, and residents of the former International Zone,” more commonly called the Green Zone, “and surrounding areas,” a State Department spokesperson told Kurdistan 24 on Saturday.

Iraqi Christian priests warn that the latest Turkish military attacks in northern Iraq are displacing Christians and exacerbating a precarious security situation.

“Already Christian villagers had to escape their homes because of Turkish military assaults last year on the pretext that those forces were attacking the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) fighters,” Father Emanuel Youkhana told Catholic News Service by phone.

International Christian Concern –  Posted 2020-09-24 01:45 GMT –  Earlier this month, Turkish state media published an article series arguing that Turkey is the international ally needed by Iraq’s city of Mosul. The series also lamented Iraq’s official use of the name Nineveh, an Assyrian-Christian word, to describe Mosul. The article said that Mosul needs help and that “the only country that has the interest and ability to fulfill this roll… is, after all, Turkey.”

Since former Iraqi intelligence chief Mustafa al-Kadhimi took office on May 7, 2020 as Prime Minister he has increased pressure against the Iran-led ‘axis-of-resistance’ paramilitaries. The paramilitaries have brigades within the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). Leveraging the U.S. ‘maximum pressure’ campaign aimed at Iran and an anti-Iran sentiment in the protest movement that started in October 2019 in central and southern Iraq, Kadhimi is using economic pressures and pushing out members and supporters of the paramilitaries from state institutions to weaken these groups.
