EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: If the world press is anything to go by, the Turkey-Iran courtship is getting serious, and Russia is playing best man. The two countries’ strengthening ties are based on shared regional goals, the most prominent of which is Syria. But how sincere is the burgeoning relationship?
The horrific civil war in Syria is a matter of deep concern to both Turkey and Iran. What will Syria look like when the war ends? Who will rule? Will the country be split up? Will the Kurds of Syria try to establish an independent state? And what about the refugees who have fled to Turkey and become a burden there?

| 6. Sept 2019 – Bottom Line Up Front: On the heels of its suspension from the U.S. F-35 fighter jet program, Turkey is now reportedly considering joint development of its own fighter jet with Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin seized the suspension as an opportunity for Russia to capitalize on Turkey’s rift with the West. But for all of their cooperation on military equipment, Turkey and Russia remain at odds over how to approach Syria. Turkey will likely continue to move away from the West and toward Russia, as Erdogan continues his slide toward autocracy in a country that was long hailed as a model of democracy for the region.

James Jeffrey, a former U.S. ambassador to Turkey, continues to seek to appease Turkish saber-rattling and appears ready to facilitate Turkish entrance into Kurdish-administered northeastern Syria.This would be a terrible idea for several reasons:
- The Kurdish zone in Syria is the most stable and secure region in the country.
- The Kurds almost single-handedly defeated al Qaeda and then the Islamic State at a time when both received support from the Turkish intelligence service and members of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s family, if not Erdoğan himself. Kurdish forces allied with the United States when Turkey sought to undermine the U.S. position.
- Turkish intelligence is deeply flawed and politicized.
- Turkey’s previous incursion into northern Syria ended in anti-Kurdish ethnic cleansing.
Before President Trump and Jeffrey make any more concessions to Erdoğan and his imperial ambitions, it might be useful for them to consider whether Turkey’s stated grievances are real, or rather a tactic to extract concessions.

Demirtaş will continue to stay in prison as he was convicted in another case.
Bianet, 2/9/2019 – Ramazan Aydemir, the attorney of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş, has announced that Ankara 19th Heavy Penal Court has ruled for the release of the politician.
Yet he will continue to stay behind bars as the İstanbul Regional Court of Justice approved a 4-year and 8-month prison term given to the politician by the İstanbul 26th Heavy Penal Court on December 4, 2018.The approval came after the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) decision for Demirtaş’s release on November 17, 2018. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan criticized the verdict, saying they will “make their move” against it.The attorneys of Demirtaş announced in the morning they will not attend today’s hearing as they are preparing for the ECtHR Grand Chamber hearing on September 18. Russia is pleased with these developments. Moscow’s Tass media had several stories about Turkey on its homepage on Thursday.

At the same time, Ankara faces an emerging crisis in northern Syria where a Syrian regime offensive is pushing back rebels and extremist groups that have enjoyed relative peace under a Turkish security umbrella since a September 2018 deal stalled a Syrian-regime offensive.
Russia appears to be the key broker in both places, so Turkey may need to buy Russian aircraft to get what it wants in Syria. Or it could be that Russia may now need Turkey more than it cares about northern Syria. This is the complex needle that is being thread in Moscow.

Russia Resumes Delivery of S-400 Parts to Turkey
Russia has started delivering the second battery of its S-400 missile defense system to Turkey. The Turkish defense ministry said in a statement posted on Twitter that the shipment resumed Tuesday as Turkish media reported that a Russian cargo plane landed at an air base near Ankara. The delivery of the system has strained ties between Ankara and Washington.
