Metin Gurcan December 12, 2019 Article Summary – AL MONITOR – Faced with the resurging threat of sanctions in the US Congress, Ankara has brandished another trump card, warning that the US military could lose access to two key bases in Turkey. In a television interview Dec. 11, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu warned that Turkey could bar the United States from using two key bases in the country in response to possible sanctions over Ankara’s purchase of Russian missiles and its military campaign in northeast Syria. It was not the first time Ankara has made such warnings, but with the prospect of sanctions looming closer, its tone seems to be toughening.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS BACKGROUNDER : London summit exposes Turkey’s isolation and lack of clout in NATO
Semih Idiz December 12, 2019 Article Summary – AL MONITOR Seasoned diplomats say despite Ankara’s tarnished image in the alliance, Turkey has confirmed its Western orientation. The results for Ankara from NATO’s recent London summit continue to reverberate in Turkey. The opposition believes the summit produced one of the greatest diplomatic fiascoes for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). Opinion among supporters of the government is also divided when it comes to Turkey’s participation in NATO. Burhanettin Duran of the government-sponsored SETA think tank wrote in Daily Sabah, “The London summit demonstrated yet again the crucial nature of Turkey’s place in the NATO alliance and gave Ankara a new opportunity to convey its key messages to the group.”
Ibrahim Karagul, the firebrand editor-in-chief of the pro-government Yeni Safak, heads the group that takes the opposing view. Karagul is among those who believe that NATO poses the greatest threat to Turkey and argued that Ankara got no support in London from its allies against Kurdish terrorism.
MESOPOTAMIA NEWS BACKGROUNDER : Turkey’s Kurdish sweep backfires PKK/PYD KURDS COME CLOTHER WITH PUTIN & ASSAD
Fehim Tastekin December 11, 2019 – AL MONITOR – Article Summary
President Erdogan’s Syria plan has had unintended ramifications: Saudi Arabia and the UAE are now cozying up to the Kurds, the Kurds are uniting, and the Russians are guiding the solutions on the ground.
Turkey did not gain more turf in its Operation Peace Spring. Instead, the operation instigated developments Ankara wanted to avoid. For instance, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which are engaged in a proxy war with Turkey in places like Libya, have improved their ties with Iraqi and Syrian Kurds. The Kurds, meanwhile, have regressed on the ground but gained new diplomatic channels. Next, the Kurds are making headway in their cooperation with Russia and the Syrian regime. Finally, rival Kurdish parties that had split in 2011 are now seeking ways to come together again.

Turkey offers to send troops to Libya as tensions rise with Greece, Egypt
DECEMBER 11, 2019 BY JOSEPH FITSANAKIS INTEL.ORG
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said his country is prepared to deploy troops to Libya, just days after Ankara surprised analysts by announcing an agreement with the embattled Libyan government in Tripoli. The Turkish-Libyan agreement has spurred angry reactions from Israel, Greece and Egypt, all of which are competing with Turkey for control of newly discovered gas fields in the eastern Mediterranean seabed.
The Turkish-Libyan agreement merges the two countries’ Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) and ostensibly prevents other players in the area, including Greece, Egypt, Israel and Cyprus, from drilling for natural gas without the consent of Ankara and Tripoli. However, according to Greece, the agreement disregards the presence of several Greek islands —including the largest one, Crete— in the Turkish-Libyan EEZ. Athens says that it views the Turkish-Libyan agreement as a direct claim against its territory. Last week the Greek government summarily expelled the Libyan ambassador from the country, marking a dramatic deterioration in the historically close relationship between Athens and Tripoli.
MESOPOTAMIA NEWS: ERDOGAN CONTROLS THE MIGRANT HOTSPOTS TO EUROPA – Turkey’s next military target: Libya
Ankara claims it opposes Israel, Cyprus, Greece and Egypt and will act militarily in Libya & in the Mediterranean.
By SETH J. FRANTZMAN JERUSALEM POST – DECEMBER 10, 2019 14:15
Turkey is preparing a new military adventure after its invasion of northern Syria in October. On Tuesday Ankara threatened Cyprus, Greece, Egypt and Israel, claiming that they cannot “establish natural gas transport lines in this region.” Then Turkey’s leadership said they are prepared to act militarily in Libya to “achieve stability.” As usual Turkey poses using its army as a way to “contribute to peace.”
Over the last few years Turkey’s ruling AKP party and its president Recep Tayyip Erdogan have been making more militarist threats against countries in the region, and backed up the threats through several operations in Iraq and Syria. Until now Turkey claimed it had to invade its neighbors to stop “terrorism,” but now it has extended these threats to the Mediterranean, asserting that it has a huge swath of drilling rights and that Turkey has “made it clear that international actors cannot conduct search and drilling activities in this region without our permission.” Ankara has thus gone from wanting to assert that it has rights to drill off its coast, to asserting that it controls the waters between Cyprus, Greece and Libya, splitting the Mediterranean in two and that others will not be permitted there.
