On December 10, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that he was willing to deploy troops in Libya if the UN-backed Government of National Accord in Tripoli requested it. He reiterated the offer during a December 15 meeting with GNA prime minister Fayez al-Sarraj in Ankara—a visit that arose after Gen. Khalifa Haftar, who heads the self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA) and seeks to replace the GNA, renewed his push to take Tripoli by force.

Wegen möglicher amerikanischer Sanktionen droht der türkische Präsident den Vereinigten Staaten, ihnen die Genehmigung zur Nutzung zweier Militärbasen zu entziehen. Das träfe auch die Nato. Es gehört zum Arsenal der türkischen Außenpolitik, mit der Schließung der Luftwaffenbasis Incirlik und des Radarstützpunkts Kürecik zu drohen. Präsident Recep Tayyip Erdogan konfrontierte die Vereinigten Staaten in einem Fernsehinterview am Sonntagabend ein weiteres Mal mit dieser Drohung. Falls es erforderlich sei, werde sich die Türkei zu dieser Maßnahme gezwungen sehen, sagte Erdogan. Dabei sei es doch für beide Seiten wichtig, dass die Vereinigten Staaten keine Schritte unternähmen, die die bilateralen Beziehungen irreparabel beschädigten.
