Ankara’s Goals and European Concerns – SWP Comment 2020/C 01, January 2020, 4 Pages
Following the US decision to withdraw troops from Northeast Syria and upon separate agreements with the US and Russia, Ankara established what it calls a safe zone in the area between Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ayn. Even if spanning a smaller territory than envisaged, Turkey aims with its safe zone to impede Kurdish autonomy in Northern Syria, on the one hand, and to return refugees who have increasingly become a domestic policy challenge for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP thereafter), on the other hand. Turkey’s plan for repatriation signals that its interests align with European interests in refugee return. Given concerns about the safety of refugees, voluntary nature of return, and Ankara’s attempts at demographic engineering, Europeans should not support a Turkey-led repatriation to Syria without conditions.

İran, terör örgütü PKK’nın elebaşı Murat Karayılan’ın yakalandığı haberini teyit etti.
İran Meclisi Milli Güvenlik ve Dış Politika Komisyonu Başkanı Alaaddin Burucerdi, Fars Haber Ajansına yaptığı açıklamada, terör örgütü elebaşı Murat Karayılan’ın, İran tarafından yakalandığını söyledi.
Konuya ilişkin haberleri değerlendiren Burucerdi, ”Bu haberler doğrudur, İran istihbarat birimleri PKK’nın iki numaralı ismini tutuklamıştır” ifadesini kullandı.
Burucerdi, ”İstihbarat güçlerimiz, Karayılan’ı yakalayarak önemli bir iş başarmışlardır” diye konuştu.
İran Devrim Muhafızlarının, 16 Temmuzdan beri terör örgütü PJAK’a yönelik operasyonlarında örgüte darbe vurulduğunu kaydeden Burucerdi, ”Bizim, Devrim Muhafızlarından da beklentimiz budur” dedi.

In late November, Turkey set its sights on a new goal.
In Libya, a long-forgotten civil war was raging. The government in Tripoli, often called the Government of the National Accord, was losing ground to the Libyan National Army, led by a man named Khalifa Haftar, whose forces were based in eastern Libya.
Turkey supports Tripoli; Egypt supports Haftar. It is part of a much wider struggle that represents Turkey’s attempt to revive influence not seen since the end of the First World War. A century ago, the European powers thought that the Ottoman Empire could be easily chopped up and its territories given away.
Today Turkey is back, moving into areas like northern Iraq, northern Syria, Libya and even the Gulf and Somalia.
