United States President Joe Biden may speak with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as early as this week, ending months of silence from the new occupant of the White House.
Sources in Washington told Ahval News on Sunday that White House officials informed Turkish diplomats that there was a likelihood that Biden would make a phone call to Erdoğan now that he has called Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. He spoke with Mitsotakis on March 25, the 200th anniversary of Greece’s independence from the Ottoman Empire.

Die türkische Lira fiel am Mittwoch und steuerte auf einen dritten Verlusttag in Folge zu, nachdem die Ratingagentur Fitch gemeinsam mit Investoren eine Entscheidung von Präsident Recep Tayyip Erdogan, den Gouverneur der Zentralbank zu entlassen, zufallgebracht hatte.
Die Lira fiel um 0,5 Prozent auf 7,98 dollar und näherte sich damit einem psychologischen Schlüsselniveau von 8 gegenüber der US-Währung. Das verlängerte die Verluste seit dem Freitag fast 10 Prozent.

Turkey’s lira fell on Wednesday, heading for a third-straight day of losses, after credit ratings agency Fitch joined investors in slamming a decision by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to sack the governor of the central bank.
The lira dropped 0.5 percent to 7.98 per dollar, nearing a key psychological level of 8 against the U.S. currency. That extended losses since Friday’s close to almost 10 percent.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan should drop his adherence to Islamic finance principles and work to reform Turkey’s current foreign exchange system, Johns Hopkins University professor Dr. Steve H. Hanke wrote in an opinion piece in The National Review.
Last Friday, Erdogan fired Turkey’s Central Bank (TCB) Governor Naci Ağbal after he raised interest rates just several days earlier.
Ağbal was widely seen by investors as a welcome return to mainstream economic thinking and away from the unorthodox view that low interest rates led to decreased inflation. The new TCB Governor Sahap Kavcıoğlu, is a former member of Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), who shares his views on the relationship between interest rates and inflation.
