MESOPOTAMIA NEWS SPECIAL : Erdoğan sacks trade minister after nepotism allegations
- Ahval NEWS – Apr 21 2021 09:45 Gmt+3 – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan fired Ruhsar Pekcan as trade minister after her ministry awarded a contract to a family company.
Erdoğan replaced Pekcan with Mehmet Mus, a deputy chief of his governing Justice and Development Party (AKP), according to a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday. He provided no reason for the dismissal.
Pekcan’s ministry had granted a contract for the purchase of disinfectants to a company chaired by her husband. The minister had sought to defend her actions on Tuesday, saying that the lowest bidder was chosen regardless of the company owner. She was responding to a report by the Oda TV news website on Friday that her ministry and related institutions bought disinfectant worth 9 million liras ($930,000) from two companies in which she was a part-owner with her husband Hasan.
MESOPOTAMIA NEWS: Erdogan entlässt Handelsminister nach Vetternwirtschaftsvorwürfen
Ahval NEWS 21.

Deputies from Turkey’s Republican People’s Party (CHP) and Germany’s Die Linke have launched inquiries in their respective parliaments over claims that Turkey’s ruling party municipalities have aided several hundred people to cross into Europe illegally, daily BirGün reported on Sunday.
The parliamentary inquiries by Orhan Sarıbal and Gökay Akbulut follow a string of reports on Turks travelling to Germany with a special passport for trips facilitated by ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) municipalities, only to never return.
Earlier in April, activity reports for 2020 from the Yeşilyurt municipality in Turkey’s southeastern Malatya province revealed a trip to Germany in September. Of the 45 participants on the trip, 43 failed to come back home for unknown reasons.

As Turkish President High-Fives Chinese Foreign Minister, Uyghur Leader Criticizes Turkish Policy: ‘This Is Dipping Your Bread In Your Brothers’ Blood’ – MEMRI Special Dispatch No. 9286
On March 24, 2021, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wangi Yi in Ankara. During the meeting, Çavuşoğlu reportedly said he would like to see Chinese President Xi Jinping visit Turkey to further develop the relationship. Later in the day, Yi met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who gave Yi a high five.
Some Turkish opposition media outlets reacted to the high five as a symbol of how Erdoğan, by strengthening relations with China, is betraying the Uyghurs, a Turkic minority in China with whom many Turks feel an ethnic connection and against whom the Chinese government, according to then Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and current Secretary of State Antony Blinken, is committing “genocide.”

On March 12, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu confirmed Ankara would host a senior-level meeting between the Afghan government and the Taliban, the group which ruled the country prior to the U.S. invasion in 2001. “Turkey is trusted by both parties of the negotiation. Both the Taliban and the negotiation delegation, meaning the government side, had asked us to host such a meeting before,” Çavuşoğlu said. Arrangements are now being made for the conference while U.S. President Joe Biden considers whether to meet a May 1 deadline for the withdrawal of the last 3,500 American troops from Afghanistan, Reuters said.

- Ahval NEWS Apr 07 2021 12:48 Gmt+3 – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was left standing without a chair at a top-level EU meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Tuesday.
Von der Leyen, the head of the EU’s executive arm, stood visibly perplexed as Erdoğan and Charles Michel, president of the European Council, settled into two gilded Ottoman-style chairs flanked by EU and Turkish flags at the presidential palace in Ankara.
“Em?” was her response as she looked at Erdoğan and Michel questioningly.
