MESOP NEWS REFERENDUM COUNTING RESULTS IN KURDISTAN (TURKEY)

Another surprising result was Muş’s support for the changes, despite the fact that in the last general elections 61.8 percent of the province backed the HDP. Muş, just like Urfa, is home to an electorate that is politically very similar to the rest of the AK Party constituency.

Investment flow toward the region and Kurdish community’s outlook directly affects nationalistic sentiments.

MESOP NEWS TOP OF THE AGENDA : ANALYSTS ABOUT THE REFERENDUM RESULTS IN TURKEY – AP – BBC – HURRIYET – WASHINGTON POST – NEW YORK TIMES – FINANCIAL TIMES et.al.

Turkey Referendum Challenged Over Irregularities

Turkey’s main opposition party has called on the country’s electoral board to annul the results of a Sunday referendum that appeared to grant President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sweeping new powers. The opposition has alleged irregularities such as ballot fraud and vowed to take the case to the Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights (Hurriyet). State news agency Anadolu said the “yes” camp on the referendum garnered 51.4 percent of votes (AP), while the national electoral board said final results will be announced within twelve days. If confirmed, the result will allow the president, who first came to power as prime minister in 2003, to serve as head of state until 2029 (WaPo). The European Commission called on Turkey to seek “the broadest possible consensus” when implementing the changes, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the result shows “how deeply divided Turkish society is” (BBC).

ANALYSIS

“The Turkish public seems to have given Erdogan and the AKP license to reorganize the Turkish state and in the process raze the values on which it was built. Even if they are demoralized in their defeat, Erdogan’s project will arouse significant resistance among the various ‘No’ camps. The predictable result will be the continuation of the purge that has been going on since even before last July’s failed coup including more arrests and the additional delegitimization of Erdogan’s parliamentary opposition,” CFR’s Steven A. Cook writes for Foreign Policy.

“Turkey today is increasingly isolated, particularly from the West. In recent years, Mr. Erdogan has accused Washington and Brussels of ‘dirty plots’ against Turkey. Last month, he lashed out at Germany for using ‘Nazi tactics’ and called the Dutch ‘fascists’ and ‘Nazi remnants’ for blocking efforts to campaign for the referendum in the Netherlands. This belligerence has resonated with the conservative Muslims who feel alienated from the West and resentful of the growing Islamophobia that they see there,” Elmira Bayrasli writes for the New York Times.

“It is the culmination of a decade-long effort, often propelled solely by [Erdogan’s] ambition, to tame the country’s institutions into obedience through his own steadily increasing gains at the ballot box. With the military back in its barracks after a failed coup last year and the infiltration of the bureaucracy by followers of an exiled cleric being slowly dismantled, Sunday’s victory delivers Mr. Erdogan an enfeebled parliament and not one rival to his vast new executive powers,” Mehul Srivastava, Laura Pitel, and Funja Guler write for the Financial Times.

MESOP TODAYS OPINION BY HOWARD EISSENSTADT – THE TRAGEDY ERDOGAN (POMED)

On Sunday, April 16, Turkey voted to grant President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sweeping executive powers, fundamentally altering the foundations of the Turkish state. Ahead of the vote, POMED published a new report by Nonresident Senior Fellow Howard Eissenstat, “Erdoğan As Autocrat:  A Very Turkish Tragedy.”

Eissenstat warned, “One of the core arguments that President Erdoğan has offered for expanding his power through constitutional reforms is that further centralization of authority will increase stability. Yet the experience of the past ten years has demonstrated that the opposite is true. Without reestablishing rule of law and the independence of state institutions, without creating opportunities for those out of power to participate in their own political futures, the instability that has rocked the country over the past five years likely will intensify. The tragedy of Turkey’s failure is immense.”

MESOP NEWS VEXIERBILD : ERDOGAN IST SCHLECHT ! / DER TÜRKE AN SICH ABER IST GUT !

–          Vom absoluten Scheitern linker Projektionen  in Deutschland –

MESOP NEWS TODAYS SHORT CUTS & RELEVANT TWEETS / DONALD TRUMP & BERLUSCONI FRIEND GUIDO LOMBARDI

Transparency: New calls for President Trump to release his tax returns came amid furor over the White House’s decision to no longer share visitor logs.
That effectively bars the public from knowing who has access to officials, even as Mr. Trump fills top jobs with former lobbyists and consultants.
Mr. Trump’s most powerful advisers now appear to be his daughter and son-in-law, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.
Populist leaders in Europe, including Marine Le Pen, seem to have identified President Trump’s longtime neighbor, George Guido Lombardi, as a potential access point to the White House.
Mr. Lombardi said Mr. Trump has leaned on his Italian expertise, inquiring once about Silvio Berlusconi, the former prime minister, because, Mr. Lombardi said, Mr. Trump was intrigued by a “billionaire who became a politician.”
