Council of Europe body to vote on Turkey status April 25
ANKARA – Hurriyet – 25 Apr 2017 – The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) is scheduled to meet on April 25 to discuss whether to degrade Turkey’s status and reopen a monitoring process against the country, in what has been decried as a politically motivated move by Ankara. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The election of Donald Trump as US president has generated superficial comparisons with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. But one key factor in both leaders’ success is a fragmented and polarized opposition that is unable to project alternative leaders or policies. The tone and manner of opposition politics are made more extreme by their own sense of entitlement, and are pushed further left by bullying from the elected leadership. Without civic education and new, more centrist leaders, American politics will continue to resemble that of Israel, to the detriment of effective democracy.

23 April 2017 – By Amberin Zaman – The US State Department had been hesitant to congratulate Erdogan on the referendum, according to Zaman, based upon reporting from an observer group from the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and Council of Europe. The group’s statement said “fundamental freedoms essential to a genuinely democratic process were curtailed. The dismissal or detention of thousands of citizens negatively affected the political environment.” The head of the delegation from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe said, “The referendum did not live up to Council of Europe standards. The legal framework was inadequate for the holding of a genuinely democratic process.”
The Turkish Foreign Ministry slammed the OSCE report as “politically motivated and accusatory” and reflecting a “biased and prejudiced approach.”

Russia Today – 2017-04-24 – Bavaria’s interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, has said talks on Ankara’s accession to the EU should be immediately put to an end, not just paused. “We have to stop kidding ourselves: There are no common perspectives with the Turkey of Erdogan,” he said.
“I have always strongly rejected EU membership for Turkey,” Herrmann, who is a member of the CDU’s Bavarian sister party, said in an interview with German newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

Die Zahlen sind eindeutig. Beim Referendum vom 16. April haben 51,3 Prozent der Türken für eine Verwandlung ihres Landes in eine Präsidial-Diktatur gestimmt. Unter den Auslandstürken, die in Deutschland leben, war die Zustimmung nicht etwa geringer, sondern noch höher: 63,1 Prozent. Das bedeutet, dass in der größten ausländischen Bevölkerungsgruppe, die überwiegend schon lange in der Bundesrepublik lebt, eine erschreckend hohe Zahl der Diktatur zuneigt. Die pluralistische Demokratie ihres Gastlandes ist diesen Menschen fremd. Mehr noch, hier wurde direkt ein antideutsches Votum abgegeben. Denn ein Grundelement der Erdogan-Kampagne war es, Ressentiments gegen Deutschland zu schüren. Er bezeichnete unser Land als Hort des Faschismus und erging sich in den übelsten Beschimpfungen der Bundesregierung und des Bundestages.

22 April 2017 – reuters – Turkey’s talks with Russia to purchase the advanced S-400 surface-to-air missile system have reached the final stage, the country’s defense minister said. He added that other NATO nations have not offered Turkey a viable alternative to the Russian system.
“It is clear that Turkey needs a missile defense system but NATO member countries have not presented an offer which is financially effective,” Fikri Isik told a news conference on Friday.“Work on the S-400 has reached a final point,” he added. “But the final stage does not mean ‘let’s sign a deal tomorrow morning.’”

21 Apr 2017 – Die Organisation für Sicherheit und Zusammenarbeit in Europa (OSZE) schickt Beobachter zum Referendum über das Präsidialsystem in die Türkei. Diese sollen unabhängig sein. Sind sie aber nicht, sagt nun der türkische Präsident Recep Tayyip Erdogan, der das Referendum am Sonntag knapp für sich entschieden hatte. In einem Interview mit dem Sender A-News zeigte Erdogan Bilder, die unter anderen den Linken-Bundestagsabgeordneten Andrej Hunko mit Symbolen der verbotenen Arbeiterpartei Kurdistans (PKK) zeigten.
