Turkey tells a story with major military personnel moves

MESOP NEWS OPINION BY METIN GURCAN / AL MONITOR

4 Aug 2017 – Yesterday, Al-Monitor colleague Amberin Zaman summarized the results of the Supreme Military Council’s (SMC) critical decisions on promotions of generals in the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK). Today we will examine how these decisions might be interpreted. Turkey’s military council made some surprise decisions this week that provide insight into the president’s re-election strategy. First, the SMC met Aug. 2 under Prime Minister Binali Yildirim in a reconfigured format of four military and eight civilian officials. This means that civilians hold the council majority for the first time. 2 Aug 2017 – AL MONITOR – Turkey’s plans to procure an advanced long-range air and missile defense system (LORAMIDS) has been dragging on for 10 years, but now it could be leading to a profound crisis of confidence between Turkey and the US-Western security blocs. The latest indicator was a July 23 statement by Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford at an Aspen, Colorado, security forum: “[Turkey has] not bought the S-400 air defense system from Russia. That would be a concern, were they to do that, but they have not done that.”
