NORTH KURDISTAN (TURKEY) – ANKARA,— A Turkish court on Friday denied a request from the former head of the Kurdish opposition to be released from jail while his “terrorism” trial continues, an official for Selahattin Demirtas’s Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) said.
Demirtas, one of Turkey’s best known politicians, faces up to 142 years in jail if convicted on charges of links to the militant Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). He denies the charges.Demirtas, told the court that the case against him was political and said he would not expect a fair trial as President Tayyip Erdogan openly urged the courts to arrest him.“Up until now I have not seen the slightest hint that I will be tried justly,” he said in his first appearance in the case on Wednesday after more than 15 months in detention.The court is set to hold the next hearing in his case on April 11, the official said. Speaking in his defense in the hearing at Ankara’s Sincan Prison Courthouse on Feb. 15, Demirtaş blasted the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) for instrumentalizing “unlawful” indictments.

Over the past few weeks, Turkish officials have broken with decades of precedent in what is still, at least nominally, a secular republic: they have begun describing the country’s military deployment in Syria as “jihad.” During the first two days of the operation, which began on Jan. 20, the government’s Directorate of Religious Affairs ordered all of Turkey’s nearly 90,000 mosques to broadcast the “Al-Fath” verse from the Koran—”the prayer of conquest”—through the loudspeakers on their minarets. Mainstreaming jihad, which sanctions violence against those who “offend Islam,” is a crucial step in draping the sheath of sharia over a society. Sadly, Turkey seems to be slowly moving along that path…

Acknowledging “a bit of a crisis point in the relationship”, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson spokes with Turkish officials in Ankara, including discussions with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, during a two-day visit.
On the eve of the talks, Turkish Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli demanded the expulsion of the YPG from Syria, “We want them to end all the support given to the Syrian arm of [the Turkish Kurdish insurgency] PKK, the YPG.”

Ankara and Washington have “reached an understanding” to normalize ties following a period of tensions, Turkey’s foreign minister said on Friday.Speaking alongside his visiting U.S. counterpart Rex Tillerson at a press conference in Ankara, Mevlut Cavusoglu said: “We’ve reached an understanding to normalize our relations [with the U.S.].”
“Of course, there are steps which have been taken for this. Both sides have expectations of each other,” Cavusoglu said. “We clearly expressed [to the U.S. side] our expectations with regard to the fight against FETO and the PKK terrorist organizations, and the U.S. support for the YPG.”
