April 22, 2018 9:58 AM – Associated Press / VOA – ISTANBUL — More than a dozen Turkish opposition lawmakers switched parties Sunday in a show of solidarity as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s rivals scramble to challenge him in a surprise snap election that could solidify his rule.A year ago, Erdogan narrowly won a referendum to change Turkey’s form of government to an executive presidency, abolishing the office of the prime minister and giving the president more powers. The change will take effect after the next elections.
The snap elections, called for June, caught Turkey off guard and come as the opposition is in disarray as it struggles to put forward candidates and campaign plans. The elections were initially supposed to take place in November 2019.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : ERDOGAN’S BRINKMANSHIP – The U.S Issues Three Warnings to Turkey in Two Days
By Ilhan Tanir – AhvalNews 2018-04-21 16:25 GMT – The first of three warnings from Washington to Turkey came on Wednesday morning from the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC). Speaking before the committee was A. Wess Mitchell, assistant secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs at the U.S. State Department.
There were several Turkey-related issues Mitchell addressed. Many of HFAC members questioned the detention and ongoing trial of American pastor Andrew Brunson who has been jailed in Turkey for over 18 months. Mitchell stated that Turkey’s indictment, which also included accusations that Brunson was working with both the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and what the Turkish government calls the Fethullahist Terror Organization (FETÖ), to divide Turkey are “laughable.” He also said that Turkey appears determined to purchase the S-400 air defense system from Russia, which could spell US embargoes on Turkey.

The state of emergency declared in the wake of the attempted coup of 15 July 2016 remains in
force, aiming at dismantling the Gülen movement, designated by the government as a terror
organisation responsible of the coup attempt, as well as at supporting the fight against terrorism,
against the background of repeated attacks in Turkey, overall a traumatic period in Turkey.
The EU, which immediately and strongly condemned the attempted coup, reiterated its full support for
the country’s democratic institutions, and recognised Turkey’s legitimate need to take swift and
proportionate action in the face of such a serious threat. However, the broad scale and collective
nature, and the disproportionality of measures taken since the attempted coup under the state of
emergency, such as widespread dismissals, arrests, and detentions, continue to raise serious concerns.
Turkey should lift the state of emergency without delay.
