On the evening of July 15, 2016, elements of the Turkish military attempted to overthrow the Turkish government of democratically-elected President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (1954- ) whose roots were in political Islam. The coup perpetrators mobilized over 10,000 armed men, deployed tanks and soldiers on key bridges in Istanbul, seized the state television channel, took hostage the chief of the Turkish General Staff, employedaircraft to strike the Turkish parliament and several other government buildings, butfailed to capture Erdogan.

Nordrhein-Westfalen setzt damit eine Vorgabe des Auswärtigen Amtes in Berlin durch. Demnach dürfen ausländische Amtsträger drei Monate vor Wahlen in ihrem Heimatland in Deutschland keinen Wahlkampf betreiben. Die Kurden wollten am Samstagnachmittag in Köln gegen den Militäreinsatz der Türkei in Nordsyrien protestieren.

Although international observers have come to decry Turkey’s slide into authoritarianism under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, they have also tended to treat his rule as a boon to the economy based on the assumption that he is ultimately a pragmatist who guarantees more stability than the alternatives. For example, when the June 2015 election delivered a hung parliament and raised the specter of political deadlock, markets went into a tailspin and remained volatile until November, when snap elections returned a majority for Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party.

Auf einer Krisensitzung am Mittwochabend hatte die Zentralbank den Zinssatz für Spätausleihungen (LLW) um 3 Prozentpunkte auf 16,5 Prozent erhöht, nachdem die Landeswährung Lira an den Tagen zuvor von einem Tiefstand zum nächsten gefallen war.
