MESOPOTAMIA NEWS „GREAT!“ – SARAH JESSICA PARKER CONTRA ERDOGAN

Hollywood Superstar Shines A Spotlight On Jailed Kurdish Politician

16 April 2019 – MESOP  – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has a severe case of Kurdophobia, but we may have to give the devil his due on this one.

He has somehow let Selahattin Demirtas pen Dawn, a work of twelve fictional short stories, from his Turkish prison cell in Edirne.  That is terrific news for Demirtas, the popular Kurdish member of the Turkish parliament since 2007, and even better news for his real-life inspired characters—Turks and Kurds alike—who people his stories.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg: Award-winning television and film actress Sarah Jessica Parker has acquired Dawn for her newly launched book imprint, SJP for Hogarth. The book will be published on April 23, 2019.

Think of the staggering possibilities: an American icon highlighting a campaign exposing Turkey’s cultural genocide against the Kurds!

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : US  / TURKISH RELATIONS – OVER & OUTTurkish-American ties enter uncharted territory

NORTH KURDISTAN (TURKEY)

Semih Idiz April 11, 2019  – AL MONITOR – Article Summary – The US-Turkish relationship is in such a bad state that the sides can’t even agree on what was discussed during high-level bilateral talks. The alliance between Turkey and the United States, in force since President Harry Truman unfolded his eponymous doctrine in 1947, is heading into the realm of the unknown. With President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s refusal to change his foreign policy orientation, and Washington’s apparent determination to stick to its guns over contentious issues with Ankara, the nearly 70-year strategic relationship is on a collision course. The relationship is in such a bad state that the sides can’t even agree on what was discussed during recent high-level bilateral talks. This was the case following the meeting between Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington on April 3.

State Department deputy spokesman Robert Palladino said in a statement after the talks that Pompeo had warned Cavusoglu of “the potentially devastating consequences of unilateral Turkish military action” in northern Syria.

Conspiracy Theory Culture in Turkey and the “Crypto-Jews”: Dönmes

Author Türkay Salim Nefes –  Türkay Salim Nefes examines the conspiratorial anti-semitic tropes surrounding the Dönmes (Sabbateans) in Turkey. Date April 8, 2019  – Download pdf להורדת ה-pdf

A well-known Turkish sociologist, Şerif Mardin, once remarked that conspiracy theories shape Turkish people’s historical perspective. Indeed, conspiratorial accounts are ubiquitous in modern Turkish politics: the Turkish government explained that the Gezi Park protests in 2013 were a foreign conspiracy meant to undermine Turkish economic progress.[1] Moreover, ever since the 1970s, various speakers in the Turkish parliament have claimed that there is a clandestine elite group determined to defend the Turkish state ideology by legal and extralegal means alike, and which is responsible for various conspiracies including, but not limited to extrajudicial assassinations.[2] In this political climate, conspiracy theories about Dönmes (Sabbateans), the followers of Sabbatai Sevi (Shabtai Tzvi), represent a major part of contemporary Turkish anti-Semitism. For example, the conspiracy theory books of Soner Yalçın became best-sellers in the Turkish book market in 2004 and 2006.[3]

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS – NEW HUMAN RIGHTS (HRW) REPORT ON TURKEY

April 10, 2019 – Lawyers on Trial – Abusive Prosecutions and Erosion of Fair Trial Rights in Turkey

Lawyers march in Istanbul on January 24, 2019 Day of the Endangered Lawyer. The banner reads: “To silence the lawyer’s voice is to deprive the citizen of breath.” Summary :

Since the July 2016 coup attempt, Turkey has seen mass arrests and trials on terrorism charges of thousands of people not involved in any violent act. Among them are journalists, human rights defenders and opposition politicians tried in proceedings which rights groups have documented as politicized and unfair. While lawyers always have a critical role to play in protecting the rights of suspects in police custody and defendants in court, their role in protecting the rule of law and human rights is all the more fundamental in the context of the current crackdown in Turkey. Yet, or more likely because of that, as this report demonstrates, authorities have also targeted lawyers, in particular criminal defense lawyers.
