Russia Ready to Mediate Between Erbil & Baghdad: FM

Basnews  – 15/01/2018 – 17:39  – ERBIL — Russia is ready to help the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi government find a solution to their prolonged disputes, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. At a press conference in Moscow on Monday, Lavrov told Kurdistan 24 “Russia is ready to mediate between Erbil and Baghdad to address their differences”.

Erbil and Baghdad have been locked in political tensions since the independence referendum in Kurdistan last September. Soon after the vote, the Iraqi government took measures to punish the Kurds for holding the referendum.After over three months, a delegation from Erbil visited Erbil today (Monday) to hold talks with the Kurdish officials over the international flights ban and border crossings.The Iraqi government had imposed a flight ban on Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports in retaliation to the independence move.However, Iraqi media outlets have claimed that the ban on KRG’s airspace will possibly be lifted before the end of January. The report was not confirmed by either Erbil of Baghdad yet. www.mesop.de
