This pattern of “seduction and abandonment” is one of our least endearing characteristics. It’s one reason the United States is mistrusted in the Middle East. We don’t stick by the people who take risks on our behalf in Iraq, Egypt, Lebanon and elsewhere. And now, I fear, this syndrome is happening again in Syria, as a Kurdish militia group known as the YPG, which has been the United States’ best ally against the Islamic State, gets pounded by the Turkish military. CTC Sentinel – October 2016 – The Islamic State may be driven out of Mosul in the coming months, which would effectively destroy the group’s pretensions of administering a caliphate in Iraq. But the Islamic State has vowed to fight on, and if the past is prologue, the group may eye an opportunity to regenerate in Diyala province, Iraq’s sectarian tinderbox. In their second televised debate, which focused on US foreign policy issues, first and foremost Syria, Clinton and Trump disagreed on the identity of the enemy, how to reach a resolution in Syria and Iraq, and the role the United States should play in resolving the refugee crisis triggered by the fighting in these states. The difference between the two presidential candidates is deeply ideological and not merely tactical, and carries with it long term ramifications, assuming that the policies articulated by each candidate will be implemented once she or he enters the White House. Trump more than hinted that the total defeat of the Islamic State legitimates using Assad and Russia. Clinton stressed a key point: she is adamantly opposed to the use of US military force on the ground, and favors assistance to the locals and targeted killings. • The lofty aspirations of Presidents G. W. Bush and Obama, aimed at solidifying a democratic civil society and developing a dialogue among cultures and religions, were shattered by the regional reality even before the Arab Spring. Any strategy that the United States now chooses will be heavily affected by cooperation with states and state-like entities in the Middle East, though at times this principle will force Washington to choose between interests and values. PRESS RELEASE – Diyarbakir, October 25, 2016 – Urgent – The Turkish Government Detains Co-Mayors of Mainly Kurdish City of Diyarbakir!
Gültan Kışanak and Fırat Anlı, Co-Mayors of Diyarbakir were detained by Turkish police around 9 PM on 25th of October, 2016. Ms. Kisanak was detained just after landing Diyarbakir Airport on her way back from Ankara while Mr. Anli was detained in his house in Diyarbakir city center. Residential houses of both co-mayors were raided by the police at 9 PM, which ended 2,5 hours later. Diyarbakir Metropolitan Municipality building is under blockade by the police and a search started at 21:00 that still continues while none of municipal personnel, including the lawyers, are allowed to access the building. After a suspension declared on October 18, Russian-regime attacks on opposition areas resumed on Sunday. | Mosul Campaign Day Eight, Oct 26, 2016 – The Iraqi and Kurdish forces were pushing in on Mosul from the east and south on the eighth day of the Mosul operation. Turkey once again inflamed Iraqi sentiment, while within Mosul itself IS continued to deal with its imminent demise.New casualty reports came out for October 23. 19 Peshmerga were killed and 78 wounded, along with 6 displaced dyingand 10 being wounded by an IED.
