Biden Visits Iraq Amid Concerns Over Stability / ANALYSIS BY RESSOURCES
Vice President Joe Biden made a surprise visit to Baghdad Thursday, seeking to bolster the Iraqi government in its fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (WSJ). Biden’s trip makes him the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit since the 2011 troop withdrawal. In 2014 U.S. troops returned to the country; they now number around 4,000. U.S. says Syrian Kurdish YPG not a terror group, despite Carter statement
WASHINGTON,— The U.S. State Department’s spokesman insisted on Thursday that Washington does not see the People’s Protection Units (YPG) as a terrorist organization, despite Defense Secretary Ashton Carter’s recent statements about the group. Spokesman John Kirby told reporters that U.S. policy towards Kurdish fighters in Syria has not changed, adding they will continue supporting them. “… Nothing’s changed about our take here. The PKK [Kurdistan Workers’ Party] is a foreign terrorist organization. That hasn’t changed,” Kirby said. “… YPG’s not a designated foreign terrorist organization. PKK is. The opposition Local Council of Aleppo says that the Kurdish police arrested its chair, Britta Haji Hassan, on Thursday.
The Council said the detention was near the Kurdish canton of Afrin, northwest of Aleppo city. It called for Hassan’s immediate release, with an apology and explanation. The YPG and Syria’s rebels have battled in the last three months in northern Aleppo Province. In the latest incident, almost 50 Free Syrian Army fighters were killed when an ammunition truck exploded in their assault on the town of Tal Rifaat, taken by the YPG in February.
The YPG subsequently paraded the bodies on the streets of Afrin, an action denounced by the Syrian Kurdish Council as a “barbaric and ruthless act”. www.mesop.de
