Three recent events, two of them from the past week, haven’t gotten the news coverage they deserve as the Biden administration desperately pursues a rapprochement with Iran. – THE WASHINGTON FREE BEACON 13 May 2021

The first is the U.S. Navy’s seizure over the weekend of a significant weapons shipment. It contained “dozens of advanced Russian-made anti-tank guided missiles, thousands of Chinese Type 56 assault rifles, and hundreds of PKM machine guns, sniper rifles and rocket-propelled grenades launchers … [and] advanced optical sights,” the Fifth Fleet said in a statement.The cache was destined for Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, whom the Biden administration recently delisted as a terrorist organization. No serious person believes the arms didn’t originate in Iran, though for obviously political reasons the United States Navy prefers not to state the obvious.In neighboring Iraq, a prominent Iraqi political activist and critic of Iranian influence in his country, particularly the arming and funding of pro-Tehran militias, was gunned down—the latest in a series of Iran critics to turn up dead. The early reporting suggests an Iranian militia is to blame.

Swiss intelligence chief to step down following dispute over Crypto AG spy scandal

THE DIRECTOR OF SWITZERLAND’S spy service will step down once his mandate ends in August, allegedly over a dispute with the country’s governing council about the Crypto AG affair, which shook Swiss politics last year. Jean-Philippe Gaudin headed Switzerland’s Military Intelligence Service from 2008 to 2015. He then served as a defense attaché at the Swiss embassy in Paris, France, before being appointed by the then-Defense Minister, Guy Parmelin as director of the Federal Intelligence Service (FIS). Founded in 2010, the FIS performs both domestic and external intelligence functions in the Alpine state.

I WAS SEVEN YEARS OLD when World War II ended, but I remember the way the war lived in our house. Both my parents were secular, non-Zionist Jewish immigrants and lifelong followers of the Soviet Union, which they believed would end exploitation, poverty, and racism. My siblings and I have memories of blacked-out windows and air raid sirens and the sound of incessant war reports on the radio, which my father turned up as loudly as possible to drown out the normal din of childhood. He raved almost daily, waving his fists in the air, cursing the “Nazi swine!” and obsessively following the progress of the Red Army, which he hoped would save not only the Jews but the entire human race. I cannot recall my parents talking about what many American Jews of that period considered the promised land, the Zionist project in Palestine.

Overview

• For the past 24 hours there has been continuous, massive rocket fire from the Gaza Strip targeting Israel. During the night longer-range rockets were fired, reaching the center of the country. As of noon, May 12, 2021, five Israelis had been killed and scores wounded. In the morning an anti-tank missile was fired (the second since the escalation began), killing one person and wounding two. Throughout the morning hours the terrorist organizations continued firing rockets, most of them targeting the Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip.
• Hamas regards the events that have unfolded so far as a “victory.” Hamas gave Israel an ultimatum, carried out its threats, caused loss of life and property damage, and significantly disrupted the fabric of daily life in Israel. The rioting Israeli Arabs add to Hamas’ claim of victory.
• Israel has signaled that its response will not be proportional or be limited in duration. Israeli aircraft has carried out massive attacks, destroying several high-rise buildings in the Gaza Strip where senior Hamas operatives lived, and killing senior operatives in the military-terrorist wings of both Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : Iran’s ultra-conservative ex-president Ahmadinejad to run again

MESOP NEWS  13 May 2021 – TEHRAN,— Iranian ultra-conservative ex-president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad put his name forward Wednesday as a candidate to succeed moderate President Hassan Rouhani in elections next month.

“Millions of people across the country have invited me to stand for election, and even ordered me to come here to register, placing a heavy responsibility on my shoulders,” Ahmadinejad said, speaking after he submitted his application to the interior ministry. The build-up to June 18 polls comes as Iran and world powers wrangle over reviving a 2015 nuclear accord, from which the US withdrew unilaterally in 2018, reimposing crippling sanctions.

Hopefuls have until Saturday to register, and will then be vetted by the conservative-dominated Guardian Council before a list of approved candidates is published by May 27, after which campaigning begins.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a state of emergency in Lod, where police said “wide-scale riots erupted against  Arab residents,” and authorities later imposed an overnight curfew there. –

 

Al-Monitor Staff  May 12, 2021 – Police in Israel are placing the central city of Lod under curfew following two nights of deadly clashes between Jewish and Arab residents. From 8 p.m. on Wednesday until 4 a.m. Thursday morning, people in Lod are banned from leaving their homes and non-residents cannot enter the city. Exceptions to the curfew will be made for residents in need of medical attention or seeking shelter from rockets.

The Syrian Salvation Government of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) plans to establish a military academy in Idleb province, northwest Syria, aiming to graduate military cadres with various specializations.

According to a source, intensive meetings are taking place with officers of different ranks and specializations, defecting from regime forces.The source added that these meetings come ahead of establishing a military academy in Idleb, which will graduate qualified military cadres and instructors for various military specializations.

Als Folge des Konflikts zwischen Israel und den Palästinensern nehmen auch die Spannungen zwischen jüdischen und arabischen Israelis zu. In Bat Yam südlich von Tel Aviv wurde am Mittwochabend ein mutmaßlich arabischer Einwohner von einer wütenden Menge ultranationalistischer Juden attackiert. Bilder zeigten, wie mehrere Dutzend Angreifer den Mann gewaltsam aus seinem Auto zerrten und ihn bewusstlos prügelten.
