ANKARA – 29 Jan 2016 – HURRIYET – A Feb. 28, 2015 agreement between ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) officials, dubbed the “Dolmabahçe Agreement,” was not the product of a “negotiation,” Deputy Prime Minister Yalçın Akdoğan has claimed, adding that the intelligence services “would meet even the devil” if needed.
“The state didn’t give up [on the peace process]. The terror organization and its stakeholders betrayed the process,” Akdoğan said late on Jan. 28.  Read more

MESOP : A NEW STABIL AXIS ? – Special Dispatch No. 6284 – MEMRI

Pro-AKP ‘Yeni Safak’ Columnist Proposes Saudi-Pakistani-Turkish-Egyptian Alliance Against Iranian Expansionism

In a January 8, 2016 column titled “Iran Must Withdraw from Syria, Mursi Must Come to Turkey,” in the Turkish Islamist daily Yeni Safak, which is close to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his AKP government, Ibrahim Karagul wrote that in order to resolve the multinational crisis in the region and to prevent a war that will last 100 years, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, and Pakistan must unite against Iran. Karagul also suggested that Saudi Arabia and Egypt must mend their ties with the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), which he calls “the region’s most dynamic force,” echoing Erdogan’s and the AKP’s strong advocacy for this radical Islamist movement. This, he wrote, would make such an alliance possible, and would weaken Iran’s expansionism. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=70687

MESOP TODAYS OPINION BY FRZAND SHERKO – In the Regional Power Struggle, has Erbil Decided to Join the Sunni Bloc?

Frzand Sherko – Frzand Sherko is a strategic researcher, political columnist, and directs the De-Radicalization Project in Iraqi Kurdistan

29 Jan 2016 – The security of the Kurdistan Region-Iraq (KRI) depends more on agreements between Erbil and Kurdistan’s neighbors than the KRI’s own security and intelligence capabilities. Whenever the regional powers surrounding the KRI have suspected that their interests are at risk, they have not hesitated to put the KRI’s security and stability in jeopardy to secure their interests. However, these regional power’s interests, increasingly at odds with one another, have begun to exacerbate the KRI’s security and internal political challenges. MESOP : THE BACKGROUND OF THE GREAT KURDISH HUMAN SMUGGLER

Hero Or Profiteer? – The Iraqi Kurdish People Smuggler Who’s Become A Celebrity

By Alaa Latif – Some locals say they trust the Iraqi Kurdish people smuggler known as Riza Kewi more than their own government. Kewi says it’s because he’s honest. But not all his clients agree.

28.01.2016 | Sulaymaniyah – niqash – مهاجرون يسيرون لمسافات طويلة قبل الوصول الى احدى الدول الاوربيةOver the past summer a figure has emerged in Iraqi Kurdistan who locals say they trust more than they trust their politicians or other officials. His name is Riza Kewi and he is a people smuggler who helps those trying to immigrate to Europe as refugees; he boasts that he has helped over 8,000 people get to Europe and last summer he was commonly quoted saying things like this: “There is nothing for you in Iraqi Kurdistan. Leave the country for the officials and come with me. I will make sure you reach Europe”. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=70697

WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA)

MESOP GENEVA : Russia’s Military Campaign in Syria Contradicts Push for Geneva Compromise

By Antoun Issa | Senior Editor | Jan 28, 2016 MIDDLE EAST INSTITUTE – On the eve of the third round of Syrian peace talks, it is becoming clear that the political track is far removed from the military trajectories on the ground. While diplomats scurry to draw up agendas for Geneva III, and opposition delegates argue over representation, the war in Syria continues on its own course seemingly oblivious to the murmurs around it. Russia presents itself as a major proponent for talks and a consistent advocate for a “political solution”, while simultaneously advancing its own agenda militarily that contradicts the spirit of negotiations and compromise. NORTH KURDISTAN (TURKEY)

MESOP : STRATFOR INTEL ABSTRACT TURKEY FUTURE 2016 – “In addition to Turkey’s unique regional position, the country also has the potential to become the richest Muslim country in the world, another element in the rising regional power’s favor. As evidenced by the recent dip in oil prices, oil will be less profitable for Gulf States, especially given the fracking revolution in the United States. A recent report by a US-based intelligence firm, Stratfor Global Intelligence, estimates that Turkey will become the region’s economic leader as early as this year.” www.mesop.de

MESOP ANALYSIS – The Case for Turkey’s EU Membership

Maurizio Geri   – January 28, 2016 – FIKRA FORUM – Turkey is poised to become the most pivotal country of the Middle East. Turkey’s position as the geographical, historical, religious and cultural bridge between Europe and Asia leaves it uniquely situated in the region. It is also a close regional ally of Israel and the major Arab powers of Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Moreover, it is the Sunni country closest to Iran. Consequently, Turkey could play a fundamental role in the fight against ISIS, as well as the mediation process between Shiite and Sunni groups. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=70707
