Turkish premier censures opposition lawmakers over controversial video

PressTV 7.9.2012 – Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has censured a group of lawmakers from the opposition Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) over a recent controversial video. The video revealed that nine BDP lawmakers met the members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in Semdinli district in Turkey’s southeastern province of Hakkari last month.

The Turkish premier called for the revocation of legislative immunity for the BDP lawmakers on Wednesday.“We have told the judiciary what needs to be said. And we will do what is needed at the parliament,” Erdogan said in an address to a meeting of his ruling Justice and Development Party.Courts need approval of the Turkish parliament to revoke the immunity.  “If they (the BDP lawmakers) are looking for a more comfortable place, I will give them an address: They can go to Kandil (Mountain where the PKK is based). But if they want to work within this parliament, they must act within the framework of the constitution and the law,” Erdogan stated.A local prosecutor has started an investigation into the reliability of the video.Clashes between the Turkish army and the PKK have intensified in recent months.
