Supreme Court of Appeal approves prison sentence for Tuncel

ANF – ANKARA 28.12.2013 – The 9th Chamber of the Turkish Supreme Court of Appeal has unanimously approved the eight years and nine months prison sentence asked for HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) co-chair and Istanbul deputy Sebahat Tuncel.

Tuncel was tried by Istanbul 10th High Criminal Court on charges of being a member of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). She had been arrested but was released in 2007 when elected MP as her trial continued. HDP co-chair will be stripped off of her legal mandate should the court verdict be sent to the parliament and be read at the general assembly. She would further be put in jail and denied permission to be a MP for receiving a prison sentence over one year.
