Mella Bextiyar, chairman of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) executive council, gave his views on the alleged collaboration between the Syrian regime and PYD in an interview with Sterk TV. – Question: PYD is often accused of adopting policies in favor of the Assad regime. What do you make of this?
Mella Bextiar: There is no truth in these accusations. We have adopted similar strategies in the past. When the Iraqi state withdrew from the Kurdish areas, we never sought confrontations with them. We protected Kurdistan. Even our comrades in the KDP did the same thing, along with many others. That didn’t imply that we were Saddam Hussein’s collaborators. He left us alone, and we did nothing to provoke him, why should we have? We simply seized the administration of our areas. I for once do not take these accusations seriously and I am sure that they will turn out to be mere fabrications and lies.
