MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : A REALLY NEW AXIS ? – Bennett’s trip to Amman fits Biden’s plan for a Jordan-Egypt-Israel axis

11 July DEBKA FILES ISRAEL

US President Joe Biden is developing his own prescription for a US-backed Middle East alignment. A key element is a stable Jordan, whose regime badly needs shoring up. This accounts for Secretary of State Antony Blinken unusual commendation of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s unannounced trip to Amman on June 29 for his first encounter with King Abdullah of any Israeli leader in five years – although the palace was annoyed by the leak of the supposedly secret event.

Israel sweetened the pill by signing a deal to double its supply of water to arid Jordan by an additional 50 million cubic meters and hiked the cap on Jordanian exports to the West Bank from $160 million to $700 million.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : PRODUCING MORE REFUGEES ! – Syria govt raises bread, diesel prices as crisis deepens

7 hours ago   11 July 2021 – AFP @afp

DAMASCUS, Syria — Steep bread and diesel price hikes went into force in government-held parts of war-torn Syria on Sunday, bringing more pain for civilians in a long-running economic crisis.

The price of diesel fuel nearly tripled and the price of bread doubled, according to the official SANA news agency, only days after Damascus announced an increase in the price of petrol.

The move coincided with a decree issued by President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday that increases by 50 percent public sector salaries and sets the minimum wage at 71,515 Syrian pounds a month ($57 at the official rate), up from 47,000 pounds ($37).

Kurdish authorities in Syria on Saturday slammed the UN Security Council for failing to reopen an aid crossing to the northeast despite approving deliveries through the frontier with Turkey.

“We are not opposed to aid deliveries to the Syrian people… but we are opposed to double standards,” the Kurdish administration said in a statement. “This decision deepens our humanitarian tragedy by continuing the seige imposed on us from all sides,” it added in a statement.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS COMMENTARIES ON AFGHANISTAN / SETH FRANTZMAN & DIMTRI SHUFUTINSKY (ISRAEL)

Seth J. Frantzman   11. Juli 2021 – JERUSALEM POST

Question about the Afghan war.

For twenty years the US fought in Afghanistan. Now the US is leaving and the government is quickly losing ground to the Taliban. For many who supported the US involvement there and also in Iraq, there are a lot of concerns about what comes next. Opposition to the US withdrawal combines people who were critics of the Trump administration among the so-called “neo-cons” and also others. It appears those who most want to leave would be considered more the isolations Right and the Left, while centrists want to stay.

However the reality is that regardless of where you stand it’s worth asking some key questions.

How come after 19 years of the US working with the Afghan government, and a dozen other NATO allies, that the security forces are so weak?
