China und die Vereinigten Staaten werfen sich gegenseitig militärische Provokationen vor. Anlass ist der fünfte Jahrestag eines Haager Urteils über chinesische Territorialansprüche.

Vor genau fünf Jahren hat das internationale Schiedsgericht in Den Haag Chinas Territorialansprüche über weite Teile des Südchinesischen Meeres für null und nichtig erklärt. Den Jahrestag nahm Peking am Montag zum Anlass, um klarzustellen, dass es den Richterspruch für „Papierverschwendung“ hält. Weiter sagte ein Sprecher des Außenministeriums, das Urteil sei „illegal“ und enthalte „offensichtliche“ Fehler. Für China sei es jedenfalls nicht bindend. Auch die chinesischen Streitkräfte nutzten den symbolträchtigen Tag, um den Standpunkt Pekings zu demonstrieren. Kräfte der Marine und der Luftwaffe hätten das amerikanische Kriegsschiff USS Benfold zum Verlassen chinesischer Hoheitsgewässer in der Nähe der Paracel-Inseln genötigt, teilte ein Militärsprecher mit. Sie hätten den amerikanischen Zerstörer nachverfolgt, überwacht und Warnungen ausgesprochen. In Staatsmedien war später die Rede davon, die USS Benfold sei „vertrieben“ worden. Der Sprecher warf der amerikanischen Besatzung vor, „in ernster Weise“ Chinas Souveränität verletzt zu haben, weil die Paracel-Inseln zu China gehörten. Die Vereinigten Staaten sollten von „Provokationen dieser Art“ absehen. „Andernfalls werden alle Konsequenzen, die daraus erwachsen, von der amerikanischen Seite getragen“, sagte der Militärsprecher.

Cuba Sees Largest Anti-government Protests in Decades
Thousands of people in cities across Cuba yesterday protested against the country’s leadership (NYT) and food and medicine shortages in what appear to be the country’s largest anti-government protests in nearly thirty years.

Protesters called for political freedom (CNN) and for President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez to step down. Diaz-Canel responded in a televised address in which he blamed U.S. sanctions for economic woes, offered no concessions, and called on Cubans who support the government to confront protesters in the streets. The director of Human Rights Watch said the group received reports of at least twenty arrests (WaPo) during the demonstrations. Under President Donald Trump, the United States imposed some of its toughest economic measures against Cuba in decades, and the Joe Biden administration has not lifted them. Cuba is experiencing its worst economic contraction in over thirty years, and currency reform caused inflation to surge (Miami Herald) in recent months.

 

Analysis
“Cuba decided to make its own COVID-19 vaccine and didn’t seek to buy shots from other countries. But plans to immunize the population with a homegrown vaccine [have] been plagued by delays,” the Miami Herald’s Adriana Brasileiro and Nora Gamez Torres write.

“This is also the moment to demand that the Biden administration take Cuba policy off inherited autopilot, forget its lengthy “review,” and—at a minimum—take simple/immediate measures that would make some humanitarian difference,” Florida International University’s Michael J. Bustamante tweets.

TL/DR: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis applauded the rare anti-government protests in Cuba on Sunday night, as President Miguel Díaz-Canel blamed the U.S. for the unrest in a nationally televised speech.

Thousands of Cuban protesters took to the streets demanding food, medicine, and an end to the island’s dictatorship under President Miguel Díaz-Canel amid an economic crisis, worsened by a surge in COVID-19 cases and lack of vaccines. “Freedom! We want freedom,” protesters chanted in videos shared to social media, as they marched on Havana, the country’s capital.

“Florida supports the people of Cuba as they take to the streets against the tyrannical regime in Havana,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis tweeted. “The Cuban dictatorship has repressed the people of Cuba for decades & is now trying to silence those who have the courage to speak out against its disastrous policies.”

A decades-long U.S. trade embargo coupled with disabling bureaucracy has led to food shortages across Cuba and long queues for basic necessities. Díaz-Canel accused the U.S. of “provoking a social uprising” in an alleged plot to legitimize a military intervention. “The order to combat has been given. Revolutionaries need to be on the streets,” Díaz-Canel said. He did not make any concessions to protesters.

What happens now? Areas outside the country with sizable populations of Cubans, including Miami, have seen people march in support of the protests in Cuba. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the U.S. “supports freedom of expression and assembly across Cuba” and strongly condemns “any violence or targeting of peaceful protesters”. State-run media has said that Diaz-Canel will address Cubans again at 9am local time Monday.

Kirill Semenov July 12, 2021 AL MONITOR – On the evening of June 27, the United States launched airstrikes in Iraq and Syria on targets of armed groups supported by Iran. Targets belonging to the Iraqi radical Shiite formations Kataib Hezbollah and Kataib Sayyed al-Shuhada were hit. The Pentagon reported that these measures were taken by order of US President Joe Biden in response to attacks by militants on American bases in Iraq.

In turn, a day later militants supported by Iran and part of the pro-government forces in Syria fired missiles at US military positions in the Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor, and US troops returned fire. Attacks by pro-Iran groups in Iraq continued against US targets in Iraq this week. In Deir ez-Zor, American servicemen supporting the activities of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are actually on the line of contact with pro-Iranian groups, including ones designated as terrorist groups by the United States, which are allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and control a large area of the country comprising the territory between the cities of Al-Bukamal and Al-Mayadin on the right bank of the Euphrates River.

Die Kanzlerkandidatin der Grünen, Annalena Baerbock, hat ein Buch mit dem Titel „Jetzt – Wie wir unser Land erneuern“ vorgelegt. Es war in den vergangenen Wochen Gegenstand einer Debatte über Plagiate. Unabhängig davon lohnt jedoch auch ein Blick auf die inhaltlichen Positionen. Baerbock äußert sich vor allem zu Themen, die sie auch im Bundestag beschäftigt haben, etwa Familienpolitik, Sterbehilfe, Energiewende oder die Europäische Einigung. Dafür fehlen Ausführungen etwa zur Rentenpolitik.

China’s capability to compete at given levels has increased radically since 1980 in virtually every civil and military area, and China has set broad goals for achieving strategic parity and superiority, although the timeframes for such goals are vague – and neither China nor the United States has published anything like a credible unclassified net assessment of current and future capabilities or provided details as to how each country’s broad statements about strategic goals would actually be implemented.

Will the ascendency of the Taliban in Afghanistan prompt countries to be more willing to welcome senior Hamas and Hezbollah leaders?

By SETH J. FRANTZMAN   JULY 11, 2021 18:54 – JERUSALEM POST – The  looming crisis in Afghanistan, as the Taliban appear to be marching toward consolidating victories against the government, could have the unintended consequences of possibly fueling Hamas and Hezbollah.

The Taliban are a militant movement that is seeking to capture a country from the internationally recognized central government. Many countries appear to be hosting and helping the Taliban quietly.

This is similar to how Hezbollah and Hamas thrive with foreign support and receive legitimacy, despite their illegitimate stockpiling of weapons and use of extrajudicial assassinations and extralegal militant movements to threaten the region.
