Every morning, Ozlem Cekic, a former Danish politician from the Socialist People’s Party, bikes past the parliament building in Copenhagen. She is on her way to work at Bridge Builders, a nongovernmental organization she founded. Christiansborg Palace, the parliament house, is the heart of Danish democracy in the center of the capital. But in recent weeks, protesters have been occupying the square outside the palace.

Outgoing IDF deputy chief of staff Eyal Zamir warned this week that Israel’s army would struggle to manage the multiple threats facing the country.
Ben Caspit July 13, 2021 – AL MONITOR – The outgoing deputy head of the Israel Defense Forces, Maj. Gen. Eyal Zamir, is not big on interviews and rarely speaks in public. At a handover ceremony for his successor Maj. Gen. Herzl Halevi this week, Zamir dropped a bomb. Zamir, who was tasked with the IDF’s force buildup, essentially said that the IDF is not big enough and could find itself lacking the critical mass it needs to defeat Israel’s enemies.
“We could be facing a long, heavy, multi-theater campaign, combined with domestic challenges,” Zamir warned. To overcome these threats on its borders and to its heartland, Israel needs “decision-making ability, breathing space and a strong reserve,” he added. “In my opinion, the IDF is on the verge of the minimum size needed to face more complex threats than those we have experienced in recent years. Along with advanced technological capabilities, Israel also needs a critical mass of people to improve the IDF’s overall quality and quantity,” Zamir said.

HOURS BEFORE Jo Phoenix, a professor of criminology at Britain’s Open University, was due to give a talk at Essex University about placing transgender women in women’s prisons, students threatened to barricade the hall. They complained that Ms Phoenix was a “transphobe” likely to engage in “hate speech”. A flyer with an image of a gun and text reading “shut the fuck up, TERF” (trans-exclusionary radical feminist, a slur) was circulating. The university told Ms Phoenix it was postponing the event. Then the sociology department asked her for a copy of her talk. Days later it told her it had voted to rescind its invitation, and would issue no more. Ms Phoenix says she was “absolutely furious and deeply upset” about both the damage to her reputation and to academic freedom.
Essex University’s vice-chancellor asked Akua Reindorf, a lawyer who specialises in employment and discrimination law, to investigate. Eighteen months later, in mid-May, the university published Ms Reindorf’s report on its website. It said Essex had infringed Ms Phoenix’s right to freedom of expression and that its decision to “exclude and blacklist” her was also unlawful. It advised the university to apologise to Ms Phoenix and to Rosa Freedman, a professor of law at Reading University whom it had excluded from an event during Holocaust Memorial Week “because of her views on gender identity”. (Essex in the end allowed Ms Freedman to attend.)

Brennende Warenhäuser, blockierte Autobahnen – die Proteste in Südafrika geraten zunehmend außer Kontrolle. Die Polizei wirkt machtlos, und Präsident Ramaphosa fürchtet eine Lebensmittelknappheit.
Die Szenen wiederholen sich an verschiedenen Orten. Wieder und wieder sind Plünderer unterwegs. Sie zerstören Eigentum und stehlen Waren, sie zünden Gebäude an und blockieren Autobahnen. Angefangen hat das mit politischen Protesten – inzwischen herrscht reine Gesetzlosigkeit im nordöstlichen Gauteng und dem östlichen Kwazulu-Natal.
Im Großraum Durban brennen mehrere Warenhäuser, dunkle Qualmwolken steigen in den Himmel. In Pretoria zerschlagen Plünderer in Einkaufszentren die Schaufensterscheiben und räumen die Läden leer. Es wirkt wie die reine Gesetzlosigkeit. Ein Passant in Alexandra, einer ärmeren Siedlung in Johannesburg, ist fassungslos: “Ich finde das überhaupt nicht in Ordnung. Die Leute zerstören doch ihre eigenen Ressourcen.”

Die Frage, warum eine unqualifizierte Frau einem qualifizierten Mann vorgezogen wurde, ist nicht gestellt worden. Es herrschte uneingeschränkte Kaisergeburtstagsstimmung. Als in den alternativen Medien die Fragen nach Ungereimtheiten in Baerbocks Lebenslauf und nach dubiosen finanziellen Zuwendungen, wie einer Corona-Zulage, gestellt wurden, versuchte die Jubelpresse das erst mit Schweigen zu übergehen. Als dies nicht mehr möglich war, wurde abgewiegelt.

-Analysis-There can be no doubt the situation in Afghanistan is critical. As U.S. and allied troops depart, the Taliban are exploiting the Kabul government’s weakness to capture districts and towns, especially in the north.
In some areas, conditions seem normal by day but as darkness falls, armed motorcades attack villages, patrols or army posts, firing on any Afghan citizen trying to resisit.
A UN report from May listed 50 of Afghanistan’s 400 regions as being in Taliban hands. And that progression appears relentless, with eight districts falling in June in less than two days in the provinces of Takhar, Samangan and Balkh, and some fighting reaching the outskirts of cities like Mazar-i Sharif.
