On October 15th at 11:00 AM EST, The Program on Extremism at George Washington University invites you to attend an online event to discuss a new book by Izabela Steflja and Jessica Trisko Darden, Women as War Criminals: Gender, Agency, and Justice.
In their new book, Steflja and Trisko Darden analyze the legal cases of four women involved in war crimes and crimes against humanity. The authors argue that each woman’s complex identity influenced her treatment by legal systems, and her ability to mount a gendered defense before the court. In addition to unsettling assumptions about women as agents of peace and reconciliation, the book highlights the gendered dynamics of law, and demonstrates that women are adept at using gender instrumentally to fight for better conditions and reduced sentences when war ends.
Following remarks from both authors will be a panel discussion, moderated by Program on Extremism Senior Research Fellow Devorah Margolin. The authors will discuss the implications of their book for our understanding of women’s roles in extremist violence, as well as the legal challenges faced in holding women war criminals and extremists to account.

Americans are, in my experience, the warmest, most kind-hearted and open-minded people in the world. I have found this to be true for my whole life, despite being the niece of Osama bin Laden and sharing the same last name (albeit spelled slightly differently — bin Ladin is the original translation). Americans base their judgment on the content of someone’s character and actions, not on the color of their skin — or their last name. This was reaffirmed last month, after I voiced my love for America and support for President Trump. The response to ‘My Letter to America’ has been overwhelmingly wonderful, and I am most thankful to all those who took the time to read it and send kind messages, including Spectator readers. But in my private life, I have lost a few so-called friends for backing Donald Trump over the past five years.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS Intel: Turkey to test Russian S-400 air defense system amid tensions in NATO
Al-Monitor Staff Oct 6, 2020 – Turkey has issued aviation warnings for the area of the northern city of Sinop amid reports that Ankara’s military intends to test its Russian-built S-400 air defense system within the next two weeks.
“Missile firing will take place” up to 200,000 feet between Oct. 13-16 near the Black Sea coastal city of Sinop, a “notice to airmen” issued by the Turkish government read. Another notice listed civil aviation routes in the area that would be closed during the exercise. Unmanned aerial vehicles are also scheduled to be flown in the area.

Die Schreckensszenarien der Pandemie üben nicht nur auf die politisch Handelnden suggestive Wirkkraft aus: Besucher des Domino-Parks in New York, placiert mit dem von Kreisen vorgeschriebenen Abstand.
Kaum ein anderes Ereignis der letzten Jahrzehnte hat die Unterscheidung von Eigen- und Staatsverantwortung so ins Schleudern gebracht wie die Corona-Krise. Dass der Einzelne sich vor Gefahren für Leib und Leben wie Infektionen schützt und es Aufgabe des Staates ist, ihn vor allgemein bekannten Risiken, so auch Reisen in Gefahrengebiete zu warnen, galt bis anhin als selbstverständliche Abgrenzung der verschiedenen Kompetenzbereiche. Denn zum modernen Freiheitsbegriff gehört die Selbst- bzw. Eigenverantwortung: Es ist Sache des Einzelnen, wie er sich ernährt, ob er raucht oder trinkt und womit er seine Freizeit verbringt.
Genau dies aber hat sich nun mit Covid-19 grundsätzlich verändert: Das staatliche Handeln greift via Infektionsschutz auf das eigenverantwortliche Handeln seiner Bürger über und masst sich damit eine Schutzfunktion an, die einzig und allein in der Freiheit und Selbstverantwortung des Einzelnen liegt.
