What Israeli Politicians Really Think About the U.S. Election
Settler leaders are openly praying for Trump, but Netanyahu is more cagey.

It’s a matter of diplomatic decorum, but it’s also a practical choice: Betting on the wrong horse could mean alienating the next president of the world’s only superpower. In Israel, some politicians are hewing to the tradition—others, not so much.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a political veteran, managed to gracefully dodge the issue on a call with President Donald Trump last week heralding the U.S.-brokered normalization deal between Israel and Sudan. Trump wanted to know one thing: “Do you think Sleepy Joe [Biden] could have made this deal, Bibi?”
“Well, Mr. President,” an embarrassed Netanyahu responded, “one thing I can tell you is we appreciate the help for peace from anyone in America.”

Es ist das schlimmste Szenario: Dass die US-Wahlen Spitz auf Knopf ausgehen und bis zur letzten Sekunde unklar bleibt, wer gewinnt und die größte Volkswirtschaft der Erde in den nächsten vier Jahren führen wird. Und dass sofort von Wahlbetrug die Rede ist. Der amtierende Präsident Donald Trump brachte diesen Vorwurf ins Spiel angesichts der vielen Briefwahlstimmen, die spät bzw. noch nicht gezählt sind und jetzt noch die Ergebnisse verändern und Trumps hauchdünnen Vorsprung schmelzen lassen. Der Amtsinhaber sagte, er sehe sich als Wahlsieger und kündigte an, die Auszählung der vorab abgegebenen Stimmen vor dem Obersten Gericht anzufechten bzw. zu versuchen, sie stoppen zu lassen.

- Iranian security forces arrested two Kurds, Saman Hakim and Mohammed Skeikhzada, in Sarvabad (Salawla) on Sunday. Iranian authorities also arrested a Kurdish man named Ayoub Agharazai in Divandarreh (Diwandara) and another named Mohsen Saleni in Hawraman. Saleni was denied legal representation following his arrest. Meanwhile, a former member of a Kurdish opposition group named Faiq Youysifi was sent to prison to begin serving a six-month sentence in Saqqez. Concurrently, a Kurdish female activist named Andesha Sadri, who was initially arrested on October 7, 2020, was transferred from the custody of Iranian intelligence officers (Ettela’at) to begin serving a prison sentence. Lastly, the Kurdistan Human Rights Association (KMMK) reported Ettela’at arrested a 14-year-old named Sena Nekaie in Marivan last Tuesday and claimed the intelligence officers posed as education officials to set up the arrest.

Since the 1970s, every Israeli prime minister, leader or military chief who is awakened in the middle of the night and asked to name Israel’s most important strategic asset would immediately respond with the exact same words: The United States of America. More than Israel’s reported nuclear arsenal, more than the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), more than its vaunted air force and its Mossad and Shin Bet security agencies. Without American backing and the knowledge that it is always there for Israel, the Jewish state loses its relative advantage in the Middle East and elsewhere. If these generals and politicians are asked a follow-up question about the most sacred principle underlying that unwritten alliance between Israel and the United States, they would also not hesitate to declare, as one, the bipartisan US support of Israel.

MERKUR NOVEMBER 2020 – Heft 23 – Gleichstellungsbeauftragte gibt es reichlich. Aber kommt die Gleichstellung der Geschlechter auch gut voran? Daran zweifelt neuerdings sogar eine starke Strömung in der CDU. Eine Bundeskanzlerin, mehrere Ministerinnen, eine Parteivorsitzende – das genügt ihr nicht mehr. Erst wenn bis hinunter auf die kommunale Ebene alle Parteifunktionen und -ämter zur Hälfte mit Frauen besetzt seien, könne von durchgesetzter Gleichstellung die Rede sein. Auch immer mehr einflussreiche Männer in der Partei freunden sich mit der 50-Prozent-Frauenquote an. Deren Einführung scheint kurz bevorzustehen.
