MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : USA vs. CHINA – TOP OF THE AGENDA

March 17, 2021
U.S. Sanctions Chinese Officials Ahead of Bilateral Meeting
The United States announced sanctions against twenty-four officials from mainland China and Hong Kong under the Hong Kong Autonomy Act. In a statement (State Dept.), Secretary of State Antony Blinken noted a recent effort by China’s National People’s Congress to overhaul Hong Kong’s electoral system, an action he said “denies Hong Kongers a voice.”

The United States has previously sanctioned Chinese officials under the act, but the latest move significantly widens (NYT) the group targeted. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said the sanctions reveal (AP) the United States’ “sinister intention to interfere in China’s internal affairs” and that China will take steps to defend its interests. Tomorrow, Blinken and U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan are set to meet with China’s top diplomat, Yang Jiechi, and its foreign minister, Wang Yi, in Alaska. It will be the first in-person, senior-level talks with China since President Joe Biden took office.

Analysis
“In spite of its many visible defects, the United States remains the stronger power in the U.S.-Chinese relationship—and it has good reason to think it can stay that way. For all the obstacles facing the United States, those facing China are considerably greater,” the Brookings Institution’s Ryan Hass writes for Foreign Affairs.

“Even if [tomorrow’s meeting] does not moderate tensions, let us hope that it does not make things worse. The odds are that each side will restate its already well-known positions and then depart. But sober statesmen with a long view should try to identify and pursue areas of cooperation that will benefit both sides and the world community,” CFR’s Jerome A. Cohen writes on his blog.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : HAPPY ANTI-RASCIST APARTHEID & SEGREGATION   – Residents of Minneapolis’ ‘no-go zone’ speak out

A Minneapolis resident and her fiancé are now “grappling with the fact” that they “own and live in a house in the middle of an autonomous zone with no end in sight.”   – By Anthony Gockowski  –  ALPHA NEWS March 16, 2021

Barricades at the scene of Minneapolis’ no-go zone. (Hannah Bretz/Facebook) – A resident of Minneapolis’ “no-go zone” said in a recent Facebook post that she and her fiancé will be dealing “with the emotional trauma of this for a very long time.”

East 38th Street and Chicago Avenue South, the intersection where George Floyd died, is surrounded by barricades and patrolled by black-bloc activists who have transformed the memorial site into an autonomous zone.

The area is informally referred to as a “no-go zone” because of reports that police are either hesitant to respond to calls directly within the zone or are met with resistance when they attempt to do so.

“Police were not allowed to get into the area,” said Kim Griffin, a relative of Imaz Wright, who was shot and killed in the no-go zone on March 6. “It was made clear law enforcement was not welcome to penetrate that zone,” Griffin added.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : BIDEN & RED CHINA ! – Why A Conventional Military Buildup with China Deserves a Second Look

OPINION —   16 March 2021 – Last week, the Biden administration spelled out its opening carrot-and-stick policy toward the Beijing regime during appearances before two different Congressional committees.

Last Wednesday morning, Secretary of State Antony Blinken delivered the carrot elements to members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. During the afternoon, the sticks were described by Admiral Philip S. Davidson, Commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, to House Armed Services Committee members.

It was no surprise that Davidson, originator of the so-called Pacific Defense Initiative (PDI), described China as “the greatest strategic threat to security in the 21st century,” while Blinken referred to the Beijing regime as “the biggest geopolitical test of the 21st century.”

Identitätspolitik : Einfalt statt Vielfalt – Von Alexander Zinn FAZ – 16.03.2021
