MESOPOTAMIA NEWS INQUIRY : Lebanon’s economic crisis: A tragedy in the making

By MIDDLE EAST INSTITUTE –   2 April 2021  – Amer BisatMarcel CassardIshac Diwan

For the past 18 months, Lebanon has been reeling from a wrenching economic crisis. This essay deciphers the crisis’s origin, describes the current juncture, and reflects on the likely outcomes in the proximate future.

How did we get here?

With hindsight, Lebanon’s economic crisis was predictable. By the time the crisis erupted in October 2019, the economy was facing four extraordinary challenges. First, public sector debt had reached such elevated levels that a default had become a question of when, not if. Second, the banking sector, having lent three-quarters of deposits to the government, had become functionally bankrupt and increasingly illiquid. Third, the productive economy had experienced virtually no growth for an entire decade — a development with acute socio-political implications.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS FOCUS : Why would Saudi Arabia be interested in acquiring Turkish drones?

  • Paul Iddon AHVAL NEWS – Apr 02 2021 08:32 Gmt+3

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently suggested that Saudi Arabia is interested in purchasing some of his country’s domestically built drones. Why would the Saudi kingdom, which has been at odds with Turkey on many issues in recent years, be interested in the Turkish technology?

When recently criticising a joint drill between Saudi Arabia and Turkey’s rival Greece, Erdoğan revealed that “right now there is a request from Saudi Arabia for armed UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) from Turkey. These are the latest developments”.

He did not give any details. His comments did, however, coincide with news that two Saudi manufacturers will begin co-producing the Turkish-built Karayel-SU medium-altitude, long-endurance drone. Riyadh had shown interest in that particular drone since 2017.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS ISRAELI VOICES : JONATHAN S. TOBIN

Iran plays the China card while Biden fumbles

An agreement with Beijing may alter the global strategic equation and facilitate Tehran’s nuclear quest. A new administration that is signaling its openness to appeasement cannot meekly accept it.

(March 31, 2021 / JNS) EWISH NEWS SYNDICATE – In the two months since Joe Biden was sworn in as president of the United States, the new administration has been dancing around the question of how exactly to accomplish his campaign pledge to re-enter the Iran nuclear deal. Biden is determined to reinstate the pact that former President Donald Trump trashed in 2018. But rather than merely lift sanctions and embrace the agreement that was the signature foreign-policy accomplishment of his former boss, President Barack Obama, Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken were cautious about their public statements on the issue. Yet while they claimed that they needed Iran to roll back its efforts to pursue their nuclear goal, it was also no secret that backchannel efforts were underway to find a way to get Tehran to agree to come back into compliance with the weak terms of the 2015 deal.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS ISRAEL : Getting rid of Netanyahu – Israel’s new parliament most divided yet

Multitude of parties and internal division are a sure recipe for a chaotic 24th Knesset.

The 120-seat Knesset chamber is virtually empty as the debate over Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s Gaza Strip disengagement plan enters its second day, on Oct. 25, 2004, in Jerusalem.

Mazal Mualem  – March 31, 2021 – AL MONITOR – What will stand out most about the 24th Knesset, when it is sworn in April 7, is that it will be the most divided Knesset in all of Israel’s history.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS SITU REPORT : ONE LESS HURDLE BEFORE IRAQI ELECTIONS – by Safwan Al-Amin and Bilal Wahab

PolicyWatch 3462 April 1, 2021 – A complicated parliamentary compromise has reactivated some of the machinery required for this year’s proposed ballot and a potential resolution to the KRG energy dispute, though the country’s hobbled legal institutions are still holding back reform.

On March 19, the Iraqi Council of Representatives (COR) amended Law No. 30 of 2005 establishing the Federal Supreme Court (FSC), the country’s highest constitutional court. Although the decision stems from a thorny political compromise and fails to resolve Iraq’s deeper legal pathologies, it will nonetheless help overcome a serious barrier to holding early elections in October. The FSC has been paralyzed since 2019 by a self-inflicted constitutional crisis, but it can now fulfill its mandated duty of ratifying election results. It might also be able to dust off a case regarding national oil and natural gas management rights—a subject of bitter dispute between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Yet if Iraq keeps kicking the can down the road on constitutionally mandated reforms, the situation could lead to even worse political and legal complications.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS ISRAEL REPORT : Better to form alliance with Arabs than with the Left, prominent rabbi says

Haredi sage Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky says Arab parties make for a better ally in safeguarding Jewish tradition.

By  Hanan Greenwood – ISRAEL HAYOM –   04-02-2021  – Prominent ultra-Orthodox Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky |

Prominent ultra-Orthodox Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky told his disciples Thursday that it is preferable to side with the Arabs rather than left-wing political parties for the purpose of safeguarding Jewish tradition. His statement came amid the backdrop of last week’s inconclusive election. In essence, Kanievsky endorsed the possibility of a right-wing religious government supported by the Arab Israeli Ra’am party.

Kanievsky explained that, unlike the Left bloc, Arab Israeli lawmakers do not aspire to “turn everyone secular,” and pointed out that religious Knesset members would have an easier time cooperating with them as they share similar values when it comes to respect of religion, family, and military conscription.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS “OUR TOP PIORITY”!  – BOYCOTTING BEIJING? THE OLYMPIC GAMES AND PROTESTING UIGHUR GENOCIDE

Friday, April 2, 2021   – THE SOUFAN CENTER

Bottom Line Up Front:

  • The conversation about whether the United States should boycott the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, China is growing in intensity.
  • The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) remains hyper sensitive to even a modicum of public criticism about what it considers “internal issues.”
  • Done properly, an Olympic boycott would need to be tied to broader strategic objectives related to improving human rights dynamics in China.
  • Consequently, officials in the Biden administration are likely debating whether a boycott would deliver tangible change.
